While I Burned with Fever in the ER, He Was at the Game with His Little Sister Chapter 05
Ethan finally realized that I was serious aboutÂ
selling the apartment.Â
“Erin, have you lost your mind?”Â
His voice rose to a shrill pitch that made my earsÂ
hurt.Â
“This is the home we were supposed to live in after we got married. We only just finishedÂ
renovating it.”Â
“What gives you the right to sell it whenever you feel like it?”Â
I ignored him. I simply took several bottles ofÂ
water from the kitchen counter and handed them to Daniel and the photographer.Â
“Thank you for coming.”Â
“Make sure every room is photographed clearly. Include the natural light, directional exposure, city views, and parking in the listing.”Â
Daniel accepted the water. He glanced at Ethan, who was blocking his way, then looked back at me with a hesitant expression.Â
“Ms. Carter, who is this gentleman?”Â
Ethan answered before I could.Â
“I’m her husband.”Â
Daniel paused to consider that.Â
“In that case, if this is marital property, bothÂ
spouses may need to sign the paperwork before.Â
we can list it.”Â
“He’s not my husband.”Â
I corrected him calmly.Â
“He used to be my fiancé. We have no legalÂ
relationship now.”Â
“My name is the only one on the deed. You canÂ
continue taking the photos.”Â
Daniel understood immediately and motioned forÂ
the photographer to continue working.Â
Ethan’s breathing quickened noticeably.Â
“I’ve been with you for three years, and now youÂ
think you can erase everything that happenedÂ
between us just by saying we have no legalÂ
relationship?”Â
His voice grew louder until he was practicallyÂ
shouting at me.Â
“Did the love and three years I gave you meanÂ
nothing?”Â
I looked into his reddened eyes.Â
In the past, I would have wavered. I would haveÂ
wondered whether I was overreacting.Â
Now, all I heard was noise.Â
“Ethan, don’t be upset.”Â
Sophia immediately moved closer to comfort himÂ
and speak on his behalf.Â
“Erin, you’ve really gone too far this time.”Â
“Ethan loves you. He always puts you first, yet youÂ
keep hurting him over and over again.”Â
“You’re seriously selling the apartment over oneÂ
old locket?”Â
“Oh my God, this level of control is honestlyÂ
terrifying.”Â
She shook her head and put on a painedÂ
expression for Ethan’s sake. Her performance wasÂ
so exaggerated that I almost laughed.Â
I ignored her and called the building management office, then switched the call to speakerphone.Â
“This is Erin Carter, the owner of Unit 1602.”Â
“There are two unauthorized visitors in myÂ
apartment who are refusing to leave.”Â
“Please send security to handle the situation.”Â
The moment Ethan heard that, fear flashed acrossÂ
his face.Â
“Do you really have to get security to throw usÂ
out?”Â
I looked at him and nodded.Â
“Yes.”Â
“Any other questions? If not, you have twoÂ
choices.”Â
“Leave on your own, or wait for security to come upstairs and escort you out.”Â
I walked to the entrance and pulled the door all theÂ
way open.Â
Ethan remained where he was. The anger on his face quickly turned into panic.Â
He bit his lip and stared at me, anger, hurt, and resentment flickering in his eyes before they allÂ
gave way to fear.Â
He had finally realized that I was not threatening. to break up with him just to force him to give in.Â
This was nothing like any of our previousÂ
arguments.Â
“Fine. We’ll leave.”Â
Ethan tugged lightly on Sophia’s arm. His voiceÂ
dropped, and there was even a trace of pleading inÂ
- it.Â
“Erin, don’t do anything rash.”Â
“Once we’ve both calmed down, can we talk oneÂ
more time?”Â
I did not answer. I simply stepped aside andÂ
cleared the way to the door.Â
Ethan stopped in front of me for several seconds.Â
His lips moved as though he wanted to sayÂ
something, but in the end, he led Sophia towardÂ
the elevator without another word.Â
Her heeled ankle boots struck the tiled floor of theÂ
hallway with sharp, grating clicks.Â
At last, both the hallway and the apartment fellÂ
silent again.Â
That evening, Daniel called me.Â
“Ms. Carter, I have good news.”Â
“We just sent the listing to our private client list, and seven or eight prospective buyers have already booked showings.”Â
“The apartment is in a great location, with a strongÂ
school district and easy transit access. We should find a buyer quickly.”Â
“As long as the price is reasonable, we could haveÂ
a contract signed within two weeks.”Â
I leaned back in my chair and replied calmly.Â
“Thank you for handling everything.”Â
“As long as the offer is at least eighty percent ofÂ
what I paid for it, I’m willing to negotiate the otherÂ
terms.”Â
Not long after I ended the call, my phone rangÂ
again.Â
This time, it was Richard.Â
I had already expected him to call, so I answered.Â
“Erin…”Â
His tone was completely different from the last time we had spoken.Â
The impatience from before was gone, replaced by a friendliness that sounded carefully rehearsed.Â
“I spoke with Ethan today. He came home upset and has been miserable all day.”Â
“I wanted to ask whether there might be some misunderstanding between the two of you.”Â
“Engaged couples argue. That doesn’t mean you need to sell the apartment, does it?”Â
Without giving me a chance to answer, heÂ
continued, “Come over for a meal tomorrow.”Â
“Margaret will make lunch. We can all sit down and talk this through properly.”
