My Boyfriend Left Me to Die in the Desert for His Fake-Sick Best Friend Chapter 07

Half an hour later, Ethan walked into the sheriff’s

office with Claire.

I’m here for Erin. Tell her to stop acting and come

out here to apologize.”

The officer on duty frowned at him.

Are you Ethan Walker?”

Ethan stared directly at the officer.

Yes. I’m her boyfriend. Where is she hiding?”

The officer stood, took out a file, and handed it to

him.

She isn’t here. Her body is at the regional hospital

morgue. These are the scene photos. Look at

them.”

Ethan accepted the file with obvious suspicion.

You even prepared fake photos for her?”

The moment he turned to the first page, the smile

vanished from his face.

In the photograph, a woman’s shriveled, twisted

body lay in the yellow sand.

Her bloodied fingers were buried deep in the sand.

Beside the body were two unopened bottles of

water.

Ethan suddenly froze.

His eyes locked onto the two bottles in the photograph.

They were the same bottles he had thrown beside my hand the night before.

Claire glanced at the picture and immediately. screamed.

Why does this look so real? Ethan, did Erin have someone make a dummy that looks like her?”

Ethan didn’t answer her.

He suddenly grabbed the arm of the officer beside

him.

Where did you get this? She can’t be dead! She

had half a bottle of water in her backpack, and she

was stronger than any of us!”

The officer shook off his hand.

The medical examiner has already examined the

body and confirmed the cause of death. She died

from dehydration after prolonged exposure to

extreme heat. By the end, she didn’t have enough

strength to open a bottle.”

Ethan staggered backward two steps.

No. Impossible. That’s impossible. Take me to

the morgue. I need to see her myself!”

He immediately drove to the regional hospital.

Claire sat in the passenger seat, her face pale.

Ethan, you’re scaring me. Erin can’t really be

deadcan she?”

Ethan said nothing.

He gripped the steering wheel so hard his

knuckles blanched.

He screeched to a stop outside the hospital.

Without even closing the door, he ran straight

toward the morgue.

When the medical examiner pulled open the

refrigerated drawer, Ethan saw me at once.

My face had been scorched beyond recognition,

and my lips had split and curled outward.

Every fingernail had been scraped away, exposing

bone at my fingertips.

They had been ground away as I dragged myself

across the sand, desperate to reach the radio.

Ethan’s legs gave out, and he dropped to his

knees.

No! This isn’t real! Erin, get up! Get up!”

Mike and Daniel arrived at that moment.

They rushed into the morgue and collapsed the

instant they saw my body.

Mike pointed at me, his entire body shaking

uncontrollably.

EthanErinshe’s really dead?”

Still kneeling, Ethan clutched handfuls of his own.

hair.

It was meI saw her last night. I looked right at

her and called her a liar. I accused her of faking

her death. Then I threw two bottles of water

beside her and left her there”

Ethan lifted his head, his eyes swollen and

bloodshot from tears and sleeplessness.

The previous afternoon, he had heard me beg for

help over the shared channel.

But he had impatiently cut off the signal.

He had cut off my last chance to survive.

Mike struggled to sit up, covered his face, and began sobbing.

We thought she was faking it. There was room in

the rescue vehicle, but we lied and said everyone

was accounted for.”

Daniel crouched on the floor and slapped himself

twice across the face.

We left her there. We abandoned her in that lethal

heat.
