My Amnesiac Husband Asked for Divorce, I Laughed and Walked Away Chapter 09

Serena wanted to meet.

At the same café where we’d signed the divorce.

papers.

I almost said no.

Serena: [If you don’t come, I’ll tell everyone Fletcher

hit me with his car. Imagine the headlines

-‘Fletcher Caldwell Commits Intentional Harm.]

I went.

She sat by the window, makeup flawless, but

shadows under her eyesshe hadn’t been

sleeping either.

You came, she said, stirring her coffee. I thought

you’d be too scared.”

Just say what you want, Miss Shaw.”

She set down the spoon and smiled. Tessa, don’t

get too comfortable. He only issued that

statement for the Caldwell family’s reputation. Do

you really think he’s remembered loving you?”

I leaned back. Is that all you called me here to

say?”

She leaned in, lowering her voice. Do you know why Fletcher’s car accident was so conveniently timedwhy it just happened to need your rare blood type?”

I went cold.

I told Fletcher about you,she said, smiling

without humor. I told him the new admin had a

special blood typecould save his life if he ever needed it. I figured he’d owe you, and later I could use him to get rid of you. But insteadShe

scoffed. He became your numberone fan

because you saved him. The Caldwell brothers-

both idiots.”

I gripped my cup.

Serena. Do you know why you could never keep

Finn?”

Her smile faded.

Because you’re always scheming.I stood up, looking down at her. You schemed against him, against Fletcher, against everyone. But you

missed one thing.”

Finn has never liked being manipulated. He broke up with you because you cheated. He never

mentioned you because he didn’t think you were

worth mentioning.”

Her face went white.

You-”

Don’t get worked up,I said, echoing her earlier tone. “Your pretty face doesn’t look good angry, Miss Shaw.”

I turned to leave.

She shouted from behind me: Tessa! Even if he gets his memory back, you think he’ll go back to loving you? He stopped loving you a long time ago! He’s only staying because of obligation-”

I stopped and looked back.

Serena.”

Everything you’ve done since you came back has pushed him closer to me. You thought you were taking him away. But you were delivering him right back.”

Thank you for that.”

I pushed through the door and stepped outside.

Behind me, a coffee cup slammed against the table.

I stood on the steps, autumn wind cutting through my collar. But my spine was straight.

Across the street, a black Maybach was parked. Window halfdown, revealing Finn’s profile. He held. his phone to his ear, brow tightlike he was handling something urgent.

When had he arrived? Had he followed Serenaor

me?

He glanced up, through the traffic and the crowd,

and found me.

He lowered the phone. Got out. Crossed the

street.

What did she want?he asked.

Catching up.”

He clearly didn’t believe me. What did she say?”

Nothing. Just wished me a smooth prenatal

checkup.”

Finn was quiet for a second. Then he reached out and pulled my coat collar closed.

It’s windy. Get in the car.”

Were you following me?”

I waited outside,he said. I thought she might give you trouble.”

I looked at himand suddenly felt like laughing

and crying at once.

Finn.”

Yeah?”

You used to do this too. Every time I went out,

you’d ask where, with who, when I’d be back. I said

you were annoying. You said-”

What did I say?”

You said, I married you to cherish you, not to let

anyone bully you.”

He stared at me. Then slowly, the corner of his

mouth curved.

Sounds like I was right.
