From Clingy to Independent- He Thought I Needed Him Until He Realized I Didn’t Chapter 08
The second I hung up on him, Adrian started
calling back over and over.
When no one answered, he switched to texting
- me.
Adrian: [I’m not agreeing to this breakup!]
Adrian: [Are you really doing this just to spite me over a kid like Lily?]
Adrian: [You’re not thinking clearly right now. We’ll talk when you come back.]
In the flood of notifications lighting up my screen,
one avatar suddenly stood out.
The Boy King: [crying cat meme.JPG]
It was the exact meme I had accidentally sent
earlier that day.
My fingers paused over the screen as I stared at it, waiting for my boss to unsend it.
Two minutes passed, and he still didn’t unsend it.
So I waited for him to realize he’d sent it to the
wrong person and toss out a quick explanation.
There was still no explanation.
Instead, when I didn’t reply, Cameron nudged me
again.
[The Boy King nudged your wallet and stuffed it
with cash.]
I remembered the half–smiling way he had asked me earlier why I had never “accidentally” sent him
my salary.
A wave of embarrassment hit me.
I was just about to draft a very careful explanation that I had absolutely not been implying anything.
Then the Boy King sent another message.
The Boy King: [Was that a hint?]
The next second, something bright and golden.
popped onto my screen.
It was a five–figure transfer.
The Boy King: [Not an accident.]
The Boy King: [Come to a wedding with me this. weekend.]
The Boy King: [My great–uncle’s granddaughter’s cousin is getting married.]
The Boy King: [My family’s probably going to start nagging me about marriage, and I can’t deal with it. You’re single, right? Consider this overtime pay.]
But Autumn’s wedding was on Saturday too.
For the first time in history, my friendship with. Autumn was facing its greatest crisis.
I stared at that row of zeros, completely at war with myself.
In the end, my conscience won. With a shaking hand and genuine pain in my soul, I typed back,
“Thank you, Mr. Sterling, but my best friend is
getting married on Saturday, and I have to be
there.”
The moment the message went through, I could
practically hear money flying away, with “Auld Lang Syne” starting up mournfully somewhere in
the distance.
And yet on the wedding day, I ran into someone I
never expected to see.
