You Want My Grandma’s $8 BILLION Inheritance DREAM ON! SCUMBAG, Watch Your Empire COLLAPSE Overnight! Chapter 14

That afternoon, I received a message from Rachel.

> **Urgent!** Alex went to New York Commercial Bank today and tried to access the records for the loan you guaranteed. The bank refused him—because the Financial Crimes Unit has already stepped in, and every account connected to the case has been frozen.

I replied:

> **So he knows the police are investigating?**
>
> **The bank probably told him when they denied his request. He came out looking furious and immediately made three phone calls.**
>
> **Who did he call?**
>
> **First, Mendell. Then Diane. The third one… you. You didn’t answer, did you?**
>
> I glanced at my phone.
>
> Three missed calls.
>
> Two unread messages.
>
> The first read:
>
> **Evie, where are you? We need to talk.**
>
> The second:
>
> **Evie, call me back. It’s important.**
>
> I didn’t respond.

Twenty minutes later, a third message came through.

【Evelyn Grant, what the hell do you want?】

No more “Evie.”

No more “I love you.”

He wasn’t even pretending anymore.

I replied with four words.

【See you tomorrow.】

At seven that evening, I got a call I hadn’t expected.

Sophia.

“Miss Grant… please…” She was crying so hard her words came in broken sobs. “Please don’t sue us.”

“If you want money, I’ll give it to you. I’ve saved some… not much, but I can pay you back little by little. Please… I have two children.”

“Your two children,” I said evenly, “have Alex as their father. Because of the drugs you gave me, I’ll never have children of my own. So tell me—which one of us is more pitiful?”

She cried even harder.

“I was forced into it… Diane made me do it. I didn’t dare disobey her…”

“Sophia,” I cut in, “seven years ago, you walked into Harbor Apothecary and filled that prescription yourself. You signed your own name. No one was holding your hand.”

Silence.

The crying stopped.

After a long pause, her voice changed.

It became low.

Steady.

“Evelyn Grant… you really think you’ve already won?”

She dropped the act fast.

“You think the little bit of evidence you’ve collected is enough to destroy us? Alex has spent seven years building connections in this city. His influence. His network. You can’t take on the entire Langford family by yourself.”

I let out a quiet laugh.

“Really?”

“You should know when to stop.” Every trace of tears had vanished from her voice. It was cold now. “The inheritance is yours. Nobody’s taking it away. You go your way, we’ll go ours. We never have to cross paths again.”

“Never cross paths again?”

I repeated her words slowly.

“Sophia, you made sure I’d never be able to have children. You stole seven years of my life. You turned me into the biggest fool in the room.”

“And now you’re telling me we should just walk away?”

“So what do you want?”

“I want to see you in prison.”

The line went dead.

I lowered my phone and stared into the night outside my window.

Come on, then.

If you want a fight…

Let’s fight.

I wasn’t afraid.

I had eight billion dollars.

I had the evidence.

I had the truth.

And what did they have?

A fake marriage certificate…

and a lie that was already falling apart.
