He Asked Me To Divorce, I Said Yes Chapter 02
No matter how many mistresses men in their circle kept on the side, they still treated their wives well in public.
After all, there was an old superstition in their world: a man who wronged his wife would never hold on to his fortune. At the very least, they had to keep up appearances.
Julian’s father was the exception.
He was the first man in their circle to bring his mistress and the son he had fathered with her into the family home.
Not long afterward, Julian’s mother jumped to her death.
His stepmother mistreated him throughout his childhood, while his half brother tormented him.
Everyone assumed Julian would never recover.
Instead, he quietly bided his time and gathered evidence in secret. At eighteen, he turned the evidence over to investigators and sent his own father to prison.
With his maternal grandfather’s help, he then took control of Prescott Holdings.
By twenty, he had secured his position within the Prescott family.
At twenty-one, the half brother who had bullied him since childhood died in international waters. His body was never recovered.
From then on, everyone knew exactly what was off-limits with him.
Now Julian’s face was grim as he blurted, “Nora, keep the baby.”
I didn’t answer.
The next second, his gaze moved past me and through the car window, settling on someone outside.
I followed his line of sight.
A woman in a white dress stood outside our house.
A light drizzle had begun at some point, dampening her dress and hair. She looked delicate and forlorn.
It took me only a second to realize she was the woman who had called Julian.
Sure enough, Julian threw open the car door and ran to her. He scooped her into his arms and held her tightly, as though she were something precious he had thought he had lost forever.
I had believed I was prepared, but the sight still hurt so badly that I could barely breathe.
So this was what Julian looked like when he loved someone.
By the time I came back to myself, Julian was already carrying the woman toward the car.
When he saw that I was still inside, his brow furrowed and his voice turned cold. “Get out.”
I bit down hard on my lip and opened the door. The moment my feet touched the ground, the car tore away, splashing muddy water all over me.
I stood there calmly, watching Julian’s car disappear from sight. Only then did I brush the rain from the corner of my eye and go inside.
Nothing in the house had changed, yet even the lights seemed cold.
I pulled out my phone and called Mia Carver. I hadn’t dialed her number in three years.
“Mia, I have a house I need to sell. Do you know anyone who might be interested?”
There was a moment of silence on the other end. Then, as though she had suddenly understood what the call meant, Mia asked, “You’re getting divorced?”
“Yes.”
“Meet me tomorrow. We’ll talk in person.”
Then she hung up, and my throat tightened despite myself.
Mia’s reputation in their circle wasn’t merely bad. It was ruined. Yet she was the only person who had ever been good to me.
She was a notorious gold digger.
She wasn’t after a man or his love. She wanted money, period.
People treated her like a beautiful accessory, and she was used by one trust-fund heir after another. A few designer gifts bought her attention; a car or a house bought much more.
Everyone expected her to be discarded once she was no longer young and beautiful.
Instead, she skipped the sons and became the mistress of one of their fathers—a man with serious money and influence.
She got pregnant in secret and went abroad to have his son.
After that, Mia no longer had to flatter one wealthy man after another or let anyone treat her like a plaything.
I had hated her too at first.
I thought she had no self-respect, no regard for herself, and had made a complete mess of her life.
I had even said all of that to her face.
