Mr Efficiency Spent His Life WAITING for My Bestie Chapter 08

I stared coldly at Zane. Another calculated performance, staged to quickly smooth over the scandal.

Zane slowly lifted my hand, acting with the sincerity of a smitten romantic hero. “Nina, the only way to set everything right is to go public.”

“You are the one who built this company beside me from nothing, who fought with me all the way to its IPO. You’re the woman I promised to marry. Susan was never real to me. I’ll make it right: a real wedding, our license filed, fifteen percent of the company in your name. Just give us another chance.”

I held his gaze, fully aware of the cameras circling us.

The old Zane would have scorned public explanations, despised cheap grandstanding. Now he was taking full public responsibility. Once this video went live, his personal reputation would drag the whole company down.

“Aren’t you afraid of losing everything?”

He clung stubbornly to his conviction. “I’m not. Because my destination has always been you.”

His voice cracked with emotion—but only when he named the share percentage. The numbers were his anchor; love was still a variable he couldn’t quite trust.

For any ordinary person, it would be tempting. My mother and I could never earn one percent of that wealth in our entire lifetimes. Still, I gently but firmly pulled my hand free from his fingers.

I might have been foolish, but I would not take shortcuts built on lies.

“Zane, you are remorseful. But the person you love most is yourself.

Marrying Susan wasn’t love—it was your exit plan when loving me got too hard. And now? Chasing me is just your new exit plan from guilt.

You’ve always chosen the path that protects you first.”

“You can kneel and beg for forgiveness for me today. But when new crises arise, you will shift your strategy all over again. I can never get back that sense of safety, the kind where I could give you every piece of my heart.”

With every lens fixed on me, I finally spoke the truth I’d carried for years. “Zane, we broke up a long time ago. I don’t love you anymore.”
