When the Man Who Swore to Protect Me Became the One Who Broke Me Chapter 03
When I woke up, there was a message from one of his guys telling me to meet Lucas at the bar and explain myself.
I still had some stupid hope left. So I went.
But I heard him planning to hand me over to someone.
My colleague took one look at me and didn’t ask. Just wrote the prescription for PEP.
“Take these every day for a month. Then come back and we’ll test you—make sure nothing took.”
I mumbled something that might have been thanks and stumbled home.
My phone buzzed. A message with a plane ticket attached.
[Evelyn, don’t be afraid. I’m coming to get you. No matter the cost, I will fix you.]
I cried until there was nothing left, and then I slept.
I was half asleep when someone grabbed my wrist—the injured one.
White-hot pain. I screamed, jerked upright.
“Don’t touch me!”
“Hey—Evelyn, it’s me. Relax.”
Through the dark, I saw his face. Lucas.
He smelled like soap—fresh, clean. The same soap Vivian used.
I went rigid.
He pulled me against him, easy, like it was nothing. “I left you alone with him for, what, five minutes? And now you’re acting like I can’t even touch you?”
“Everyone at the base knows you’re mine. You think anyone would actually go through with it? Look at you—you’re fine.”
I was shaking and couldn’t stop. Tears everywhere.
He frowned. I could see it—the flash of irritation.
“Evelyn, you’re a soldier. You’re a doctor, for Christ’s sake. How are you falling apart like this?”
He picked up a box from the nightstand—medicine, something for my wrist. His voice softened.
“Your wrist still hurt? I got you something for it—supposed to help. Use it with physical therapy, you’ll be holding a scalpel again before you know it.”
“Come on, stop being mad. Go apologize to Vivian tomorrow—first thing. Then this whole thing can be over.”
Something inside me snapped. I looked up. My eyes were wet, vision blurred.
“Lucas Hayes, let’s break up.”
