When the Man Who Swore to Protect Me Became the One Who Broke Me Chapter 06

“What?! Evelyn jumped?!”

Lucas shoved Vivian away. She stumbled, nearly fell. He didn’t look back—just bolted for the room.

Empty bed. Blood pooled on the floor. The window hung open. Soldiers stood frozen against the wall, pale and trembling.

“Evelyn!” He lunged to the window. Below, blood on the concrete.

He spun around, kicked the lead soldier hard. “I told you to question her—that’s it! What did you do?!”

“Sir! We only questioned her—protocol. We just… there was some physical contact…”

The soldiers knelt, blood at the corners of their mouths.

Vivian rushed in, grabbed his arm. “We need to find her—that’s what matters right now!”

Lucas shook her off and bolted into the hallway. Grabbed the first doctor he saw. “Where’s Evelyn? Which ER did they take her to?!”

The doctor froze. “Major General… Dr. Lin wasn’t taken to any ER.”

“What do you mean she wasn’t taken?!” His eyes were wild.

A nurse ran up, face red and tear-streaked. She kept her voice low.

“By the time security reached her, all that was left was blood. And her hospital gown.”

“A witness saw an SUV pull up right when she fell. Someone grabbed

her, got her into the vehicle. Took off fast—no one got the plates.”

His throat worked. “What kind of vehicle?”

The nurse shook her head. “It was through the gates before anyone could react. They lost it.”

Silence filled the corridor.

Vivian stepped closer, voice soft. “Don’t panic. Could’ve been another unit passing through—they might’ve taken her to the main hospital.”

“Check the cameras. The base has footage.”

Lucas snapped out orders. “Pull every camera. All of them. Now.”

The surveillance room.

The footage looped. A figure falling from the hospital window. Blood spreading on the pavement below.

A man in combat gear, face masked, rushed into frame. Scooped up the body—covered in blood—and lifted it into the back of an SUV.

Plates were covered. Camo tarp.

Lucas stared at the screen, knuckles white where he gripped the desk.

“Back it up.”

The footage played again. And again.

He stared at the falling figure, couldn’t look away. Eyes bloodshot,

rimmed with red.

The operator spoke quietly. “Major General, the earlier footage just shows the soldiers entering her room. Want me to play it?”

Vivian jumped in. “What if whoever took her… what if it’s someone from before? From the field hospital?”

“There’s that gap in her file. What if—”

Lucas’s eyes cut to her, cold. “Stop talking.”

He turned and walked out.

“Contact every military hospital. Any female patient admitted with fall trauma.”

“Shut this down. Nothing gets out until we know what happened. No leaks.”

Lucas called in every favor he had. Used every connection. Found nothing.

He sent Vivian away. Sat alone in Evelyn’s office. His fingers brushed over the stethoscope she’d left behind.

“Where are you, Evelyn… where…”

The door opened. The colleague who’d defended Evelyn—bandages still wrapped around her ribs—walked in. She slammed a stack of files onto the desk.

“You should read these.”
