“Does it hurt?”
Evan stood there,
but his mind wasn’t really focused.
Chloe stepped closer,
wanting to hold his hand.
“Yes…”
“Evan, trust me!”
“I know Tessa.”
“She’s easy to make up with.”
“And she loves you so much…”
The moment Chloe grabbed his wrist,
her legs suddenly gave out.
Evan caught her.
Then he realized Chloe’s entire body was burning hot.
He let go of the suitcase
and carried her back to the bed.
Chloe could barely make a sound.
Her voice was soft and fragile,
the way it only became when she was sick.
“I’m sorry.”
“I’m really sorry.”
“You can go find Tessa.”
“After I feel better…”
“I’m just useless.”
“It’s okay.”
“I can be alone.”
She cried until she slowly fell asleep.
Her high fever finally went down in the middle of the night.
When the sky was starting to brighten,
Evan’s mother, Linda, called him.
Linda’s voice was careful.
“Evan…”
“Did you breakup with Tessa?”
Evan looked at Chloe’s slightly furrowed brows.
Then he lowered his voice.
“No.”
“We just had a fight.”
“She’s angry.”
“Really?”
“Tessa is going on a date with someone else.”
“Her mom told me today.”
“She ran into her at the grocery store.”
Linda continued,
“I really like Tessa.”
“But you haven’t really cared about her.”
“If you don’t love her anymore…”
“Then just let her go.”
Evan wanted to explain.
“No.”
“I just…”
“Just what?”
Linda sighed.
“You don’t care about her at all.”
“What food does she like?”
“Do you know?”
“She takes the subway every day.”
“Do you know that?”
“You could have driven her to work on your way to the office.”
At that moment,
Chloe, who was lying on the bed,
made a few soft sounds.
Then she opened her eyes.
“Evan…”
“Who are you talking to?”
Her soft voice made Linda freeze.
There was a few seconds of silence.
Then Linda exploded.
“Evan, are you crazy?!”
“What’s wrong with you?!”
Linda hung up.
A few minutes later,
she sent him a photo.
“I was going to comfort you.”
“Now I just think you deserve this.”
“Tessa’s mom told me Tessa already met the person she’s dating.”
“Just wait and see.”
Evan stared at the photo for three seconds.
“Mom, this photo is AI-generated.”
“Tessa doesn’t even like wearing red.”
“What?”
“She doesn’t like red?”
“Tessa’s favorite color has always been red!”
“She stopped wearing red because you hate it!”
Chloe rubbed her eyes.
“Evan…”
“You don’t look well.”
“Do you need to sleep?”
The next second,
Evan stood up.
“I’m going for a walk.”

his phone screen had returned to his last conversation with Tessa.
He played the voice message again.

In a daze,
he heard the hotel staff saying they were preparing for a mountain closure due to severe weather.

the closure would last for a month.
When Evan came back to his senses,
he was already standing in front of the vending machine downstairs.

he bought two cups of hot cocoa.

Tessa’s voice echoed in his ears.
“Evan, is it good? The red dress?”
“No.”
“I don’t like red.”
“Whatever.”
“I’m wearing it anyway!”

Tessa really remembered.
She never wore red outfits again.
The can opened.
Warm steam rose into the cold air.
“I like hot cocoa.”
“You remember that, right?”

Evan had been waiting for his ranked game to start.
He didn’t even look up.
“I won’t remember.”
“No way!”
“You can’t do that!”
“Evan, one day I’ll break up with you because of your terrible memory and your ‘hurdle-durdle’!”

The can slipped from his hand and hit the ground.
Evan suddenly came back to reality.
He rushed to the parking lot and peeled out.
“Faster.”
