The Alpha Faked Depression to Win My Love Chapter 09
LYRAÂ
By the time everything had been cleaned, it wasÂ
three in the morning.Â
I turned off my phone.Â
There was not much time left.Â
Before I surrendered, I had things to arrange.Â
I found a motel and took a quick shower.Â
Then I asked Mira to meet me.Â
The moment she saw how pale I was, worry filledÂ
her face.Â
“Lyra, you have to take care of yourself.”Â
“Even if we can never avenge Rowan, you cannotÂ
keep living in a haze.”Â
“He wouldn’t be happy if he saw you like this.”Â
I nodded and smoothed my tangled hair.Â
I had no intention of telling Mira what hadÂ
happened the night before.Â
Let her believe heaven had finally opened its eyes.Â
I took the gold card Kieran had given me from my pocket.Â
I had placed every dollar I owned in the sameÂ
account until the balance reached one hundred and twenty thousand.Â
“Take this.”Â
Mira tried to refuse.Â
I shook my head.Â
“You are one of the only people who ever treated Rowan and me with a sincere heart.”Â
“We didn’t receive much kindness growing up, so perhaps I don’t know the right way to return it.”Â
“When we were children, we often heard ourÂ
parents say they should have drowned us in theÂ
toilet when we were born.”Â
“Back then, those words only frightened me.”Â
“Lately, I’ve started to wonder whether childrenÂ
even their own parents did not want alive shouldÂ
ever have existed at all.”Â
“So…”Â
So perhaps Rowan and I had only struggledÂ
through the mud until twenty, still covered in itsÂ
filth.Â
The person I wanted to protect had been tornÂ
apart.Â
The person I chased after to save had never beenÂ
real.Â
In the end, we had only stolen a few extra years from a world that had never wanted us.Â
Mira suddenly seized my hand.Â
Her grip slowly reddened my wrist.Â
“Don’t think like that.”Â
“Meeting you and Rowan was the luckiest thingÂ
that ever happened to me.”Â
“There is no one in this world who should notÂ
exist.”Â
“Especially not the two of you.”Â
I looked at the certainty in her eyes and smiled.Â
It still felt like a kind lie.Â
Mira’s fingers remained skeletal around mine.Â
Her clothes hung loose from her frame.Â
If she had never met us, perhaps her life would have been brighter.Â
The end of summer was near.Â
The cicadas had begun to quiet.Â
I brushed the loose hair from her forehead.Â
“When this summer ends, begin a new life.”Â
“Forget Rowan and me.”Â
After leaving Mira, I went to see Sabrina.Â
She stirred the ice in her drink without looking atÂ
- me.Â
Her father had vanished the night before.Â
When I searched Marcus’s phone, I had seen.Â
Sabrina calling.Â
I had declined it.Â
Her mother died when she was young.Â
Marcus raised her alone.Â
She must have loved him more deeply than most daughters loved their fathers.Â
I did not say much.Â
No matter how understandable her reasons hadÂ
been, Sabrina and I were enemies.Â
She had stolen Rowan’s painting.Â
That fact could not be erased.Â
I only handed her an old phone and the key toÂ
Marcus’s study.Â
I had destroyed the other keys.Â
The phone held the recording of Marcus drunkenlyÂ
confessing at the Voss Hotel.Â
It held the video of what he did to Rowan.Â
It held the location of the backups.Â
And it held photographs of the early pages inÂ
Rowan’s diary, written when his time with SabrinaÂ
had still been happy.Â
She stared at the phone.Â
“Why are you giving me this?”Â
I lowered my eyes and smiled.Â
“The password is Rowan’s birthday.”Â
“You remember it, don’t you?”Â
Sabrina nodded.Â
“030209.”Â
Then at least some of what she had told me wasÂ
true.Â
Even now, she remembered Rowan’s birthday.Â
“Rowan left only four things behind.”Â
“One of them was the Midnight Echo album youÂ
gave him.”Â
“When you see what’s on that phone, you’llÂ
understand everything.”Â
“Before he died, he did think of you as someoneÂ
important.”Â
“As a very good… friend.”Â
The hope that rose in her eyes was almost frantic.Â
She reached for the phone.Â
I did not stop her.Â
I did not stay.Â
As I walked out of the cafe, a terrible scream roseÂ
behind me.Â
Sabrina finally understood.Â
Rowan had not chosen death because acceptingÂ
her was worse.Â
He had believed his own fated mate had deliveredÂ
him into that Alpha’s hands.
