The Alpha Faked Depression to Win My Love Chapter 08

The Alpha Faked Depression to Win My Love Chapter 08

LYRA

After that night, the fever would not leave me.

Sleep and waking bled together.

The nightmares followed me through both.

At the end of an important class, I finally collapsed

outside the lecture hall.

When I woke in the hospital, Rowan was still in my

dream.

Blood ran from his eyes as he asked why I had left.

him alone at home.

The scene changed every night.

The pain never did.

My head throbbed as I opened my burning eyes.

beneath the yellow hospital light.

Someone sat beside the bed.

He wore a blue and white shirt.

His gaze was fixed on me.

The instant Kieran realized I was awake, his eyes.

turned red.

He lifted a cup of warm water and helped me sit

  1. up.

My throat was so dry I emptied it in several

swallows.

The doctor said you have a viral infection.”

Why haven’t you been taking care of yourself?”

I did not answer.

What happened to you?”

I stared at the ceiling.

Again, I said nothing.

For the next month, Kieran stayed beside me day

and night.

He handled everything, no matter how small.

At first, he kept asking questions.

My silence eventually taught him to stop.

The night before I was discharged, he sat beside

my bed peeling an apple.

Moonlight filled the room.

An old romance played on the television, the

heroine screaming as she prepared to die for the

man she loved.

I watched Kieran’s lowered face for a long time.

Then I asked softly, Do you truly love me?”

His head lifted.

Hope brightened his eyes.

He did not hesitate.

I do.”

Very much.”

My right hand closed around the six pointed star

at my throat.

If you really love me”

I want to kill someone.”

Will you help me?”

The Blackwood family had recently been planning to launch a new education brand.

Kieran used that excuse, along with his family’s

connections, to invite Marcus to dinner at the Blackwood estate.

The Blackwoods and the Voss family had known each other for years.

Marcus suspected nothing.

Half an hour after their arranged meeting time, a black car stopped outside the abandoned factory where I waited.

Kieran dragged an unconscious Marcus from the back seat and threw him onto the floor.

They were both Alphas.

But Marcus was older, and Kieran was stronger.

(

Subduing him had not been difficult.

You don’t have to be involved in anything after

this.”

Thank you.”

When I turn myself in, I won’t mention your name.”

My voice held no emotion.

I wanted to cut the last thread between us.

Kieran looked at me as if there were words he

could not force from his throat.

Pain filled his face.

He still did not want me to make this choice.

Lyra, your brother is dead.”

Why can’t you let go of the past and begin again?”

If you do this”

Shh.”

Don’t say any more.”

This is how it should be, isn’t it?”

He killed my brother. A life for a life.”

Part of me clung to the simple duty of an older

sister.

I had to avenge Rowan.

But there was something else too.

When we were children, I stood in front of him and

chased away the older students who bullied him.

I killed the spiders and cockroaches that

frightened him.

I wiped his tears when he missed our parents.

Rowan always said I was the bravest superhero

sister in the world.

Now that I knew the truth, how could I become a

coward in front of him?

This was how it had to be.

I tied Marcus to a chair.

After removing everything from his pockets, I lifted

his hand and used his fingerprint to unlock his

phone.

I knew what I was looking for.

At the bottom of his gallery was a hidden album.

Inside were more videos than I could count.

Men like Marcus often kept trophies.

I scrolled until I reached the end of spring two

years earlier.

After watching only enough to be certain, I closed

my eyes.

My body had gone numb.

I picked up a bottle of water and emptied it over

Marcus’s face.

He woke choking.

Panic filled his small, clouded eyes.

When he saw me, confusion replaced it.

Who are you?”

I did not answer.

Marcus looked around and forced himself to

sound calm.

Have I done something to offend you?”

Do you remember Rowan?”

His brows pulled together.

His shoulders twisted as he tested the ropes.

It was useless.

I had pulled them tight enough to split the skin of

my palms.

I don’t know anyone by that name.”

There must be some misunderstanding.”

I’m his sister.”

Don’t be nervous. I only have a few questions.”

The moment he understood who I was, his

pretense shattered.

He could not escape.

There was no use denying what lay between us.

Marcus bowed his head again and again, begging

so hard that sweat flew from his face.

I’m sorry.”

I was drunk. What happened to your brother was

a terrible mistake.”

If you want money, I’ll pay you.”

If you want me to confess, I’ll cooperate.”

Just let me live, sweetheart. Anything else can be

arranged.”

I watched him without expression and picked up the knife I had prepared.

When bribery failed, his voice turned hard.

Think carefully.”

If you do something extreme, you’ll answer to the

law too.”

And with one phone call, I can make you

disappear in Los Angeles so completely that no

one will ever find your body.”

I almost laughed.

The knife paused in my hand, but not because of

his threat.

I thought of the videos.

Are there any other copies?”

Anywhere besides this phone?”

Darkness shifted in Marcus’s eyes.

He knew exactly what I meant.

His heavy cheeks twitched.

Sweat streamed faster.

No.”

Before he could react, I brought the blade down

across his right hand.”

His scream filled the warehouse.

Tell me the truth.”

Don’t waste my time.”

I looked down without feeling as blood spread across the floor.

He still would not speak.

So I raised the knife over his left hand.

My house.”

Second floor. Third room on the left from the

stairs.”

It’s the study.”

Inside the bookcase, second drawer from the bottom.”

The key is the smallest one on that ring.”

I glanced at the keys on the ground.

I considered every word.

He was telling the truth.

I nodded and lifted the knife again.

Marcus tried to drag the chair backward.

Youyou said if I answered”

Fear of death tangled his tongue.

It did not matter.

Those would be the last words of his life.

I frowned.

If you answered, what?”

Never mind.”

Keep your voice down.”

Maybe then I’ll be gentler.
