The Alpha Faked Depression to Win My Love Chapter 07
LYRAÂ
She asked me to meet her at night on the grassÂ
beside the academy track.Â
Mira wore a black dress.Â
The moment she saw me, light entered her dullÂ
eyes.Â
She recognized me at once.Â
I recognized her too.Â
I could not have mistaken the small mole betweenÂ
her brows.Â
Mira had been the class representative in Rowan’sÂ
high school class.Â
Once, she had asked me to give him a set of guitarÂ
tabs she had copied out by hand.Â
The song was Last Summer.Â
Rowan’s favorite.Â
I remembered Mira because that had been theÂ
only gift to make his eyes light up that year.Â
He had loved it.Â
She sat beside me on the grass.Â
Across the field, a circle of freshmen were singingÂ
together.Â
A faint smile touched her mouth.Â
“I used to sit here and watch Rowan sing.”Â
“There were so many more people around himÂ
then. I had to look through the whole circle just toÂ
find one angle where I could see the side of hisÂ
face.”Â
Longing softened her features and her voice.Â
For a moment, I could almost see Rowan sitting inÂ
the center of the field two years ago, playing guitarÂ
and singing one of his own love songs.Â
But as the noise around us rose, Mira’s expressionÂ
darkened.Â
“I regret it so much, Lyra.”Â
“I’ve loved Rowan for six years.”Â
“I followed him all the way to Blackthorn Academy. But before he left, I never once confessed to himÂ
properly.”Â
“Sometimes I think… if he had known there wasÂ
one more person in the world who loved him,Â
maybe he would have wanted to leave a little less.”Â
Her voice broke as she told me the secret she hadÂ
carried alone.Â
I lifted a hand to comfort her.Â
Then I realized how frighteningly thin she was.Â
There seemed to be nothing beneath my palm butÂ
bone.Â
Mira looked back toward the students.Â
Something in her eyes turned cold.Â
“Do you know Marcus Voss? The man on theÂ
academy board?”Â
My heart jumped.Â
I nodded.Â
“He killed Rowan.”Â
“I went to the commercial performance RowanÂ
attended during the second semester of freshman.Â
year.”Â
“I wanted to stop him afterward and finally tell him.Â
how I felt.”Â
“But I saw him and the rest of his band get intoÂ
Marcus’s car.”Â
“Marcus told Rowan an entertainment companyÂ
wanted to sign him. He said they were going toÂ
have dinner and discuss a contract.”Â
“But after that…”Â
Mira could not stop trembling.Â
The night wind lifted the hem of her dress.Â
She wrapped both arms around herself, but tearsÂ
kept falling.Â
“After Rowan died, I investigated Marcus inÂ
secret.”Â
“I knew he had something to do with it.”Â
“I learned that he often ate with other members ofÂ
Blackthorn’s board at the Voss Hotel.”Â
“So I got a job there.”Â
“Two years, Lyra. I waited for two whole years.”Â
“Then one night, he got drunk. I finally recorded theÂ
proof.”Â
She searched through her bag for her phone.Â
Her movements knocked a bottle of medicineÂ
onto the grass.Â
My throat tightened the moment I saw the label.Â
I knew exactly what it treated.Â
Rowan had taken the same pills.Â
So had Kieran, or so I had once believed.Â
With one skeletal, shaking hand, Mira opened anÂ
audio file.Â
She passed me one earbud.Â
At first, all I heard was the noise of a crowdedÂ
room.Â
Several men were flattering one another.Â
Then a deep male voice rose above them.Â
“The one they sent me this time was boring.”Â
“You’re too hard to please, Mr. Voss. That youngÂ
celebrity looked good enough to me.”Â
“Not even close. I’m not lying when I say the bestÂ
one I’ve had in years was that singer from theÂ
school band.”Â
“I’d wanted him since I saw him at the freshmanÂ
welcome show.”Â
“Later, I told him Starfall Entertainment wanted toÂ
sign the whole band. That was the only way he’dÂ
come to the dinner.”Â
“I put wolfsbane extract in his drink to suppressÂ
his wolf before I got him into bed.”Â
“But that soft skin was worth the trouble.”Â
“Which singer?”Â
“The one who killed himself later. What was hisÂ
name?”Â
“Rowan. That was it.”Â
“His suicide scared me for a moment. I made theÂ
academy start those mental health lecturesÂ
immediately.”Â
“He really couldn’t take much. Otherwise, I mightÂ
have brought him for all of you to share.”Â
The voices in the background faded.Â
Only a thin current of static remained in my ear.Â
I did not return to myself until I tasted blood.Â
I had bitten through the inside of my mouth.Â
My chest rose and fell violently.Â
There was no air in my lungs.Â
No words in my throat.Â
With shaking hands, I pulled a plastic bag from myÂ
purse and held it over my nose and mouth.Â
On the day Rowan died, I had stopped breathing properly in the ambulance.Â
The doctor said panic had driven too much carbonÂ
dioxide from my blood.Â
He had taught me what to do in an emergency.Â
I had remembered.Â
Mira saw what was happening.Â
She put away the phone and crouched beside me.Â
As my mind slowly cleared, every shattered pieceÂ
of Rowan’s final months came together.Â
Sabrina had told him about the performance.Â
When Rowan woke afterward, he must haveÂ
believed his fated mate had conspired with herÂ
father to deliver an Omega into an Alpha’s bed.Â
He never told anyone what had been done to him.Â
He only used the cruelest words he knew to driveÂ
Sabrina away.Â
Then he sank into depression alone.Â
The violent change in his diary.Â
The darkness in his paintings.Â
His sudden hatred of Sabrina.Â
His breakdown.Â
His determination to die.Â
Now they all had an answer.Â
When she saw awareness return to my eyes, MiraÂ
threw her arms around my neck and sobbed.Â
“But what can we do?”Â
“Even with this recording, we can’t fight Marcus.”Â
“He has money. He has power everywhere in LosÂ
Angeles.”Â
“We have nothing.”Â
Nothing.Â
Rowan must have felt the same despair.Â
What chance did an Omega without money orÂ
family have against an Alpha at the top of theÂ
world?Â
Was swallowing the pain his only choice?Â
One recording and one dead victim could never form a complete chain of evidence.Â
Even if Marcus were convicted, would theÂ
punishment ever be enough?Â
More likely, he would escape it.Â
I looked toward the sky.Â
Thick clouds moved slowly across the moon.Â
Then I lowered my head and wiped away Mira’sÂ
tears.Â
I smiled at her.Â
“You’ve worked so hard all these years.”Â
“On Rowan’s behalf, thank you.”Â
“Thank you for loving him for so long.”
