I Saved An Amnesiac Werewolf, Then Found A New Loyal Wolf Chapter 04

“I’m not going.” I said firmly.

Draven finally spoke, his voice low. “You should.”

“Why?”

“Because that bond mark’ll bring you trouble.”

“Clearing things up in public is in your best interest.”

I let out a cold laugh.

“You’re not worried about me. You’re worried I’ll embarrass you.”

His jaw tightened. He didn’t deny it.

I turned and walked away.

The night air hit me the moment I stepped outside The Obsidian Hall.

That’s when I realized how badly my eyes were burning.

A sharp pain twisted through my stomach.

I braced myself against the wall and slowly crouched down.

A deep voice came from behind me.

“So he told you that bond mark didn’t mean anything?”

I froze and looked back.

A tall man stood at the mouth of the alley.

A black hood shadowed most of his face, revealing only the sharp line of his jaw.

His gray-gold eyes were fixed on the mark on my wrist.

They gleamed in the darkness.

“He doesn’t have the right to say that.”

When I returned to my apartment, the silence felt suffocating.

Draven was gone. But traces of him were everywhere.

The glass on the table. His jacket hanging by the window. The half-empty box of medicine beside the bed.

I stood in the doorway, taking it in.

Then I walked over and threw everything into a trash bag.

As I cleared out the nightstand, a sticky note slipped from underneath.

The handwriting was crooked and clumsy. Like someone just learning to write.

[Waiting for Sera.]

My fingers slowly tightened around the paper.

Back then, I worked so many night shifts that I rarely came home before midnight.

After he lost his memory, he couldn’t even work a phone.

So he’d learned to write me notes, afraid I’d come back and not find him.

Now, he wasn’t waiting anymore.

I tore the note into tiny pieces and dropped them into the trash.

The doorbell rang. Outside stood a delivery driver.

“Miss Kaine? Delivery for you.”

I took the box inside and opened it. There was a silver evening gown.

And a black invitation embossed with gold. It was from Lilith.

[You are cordially invited to the Lineage Gala of Alpha Heir Draven.]

On the back, another line.

[Some people are only ever meant to stand outside, looking in.]

I looked at it for a split second. Then I tossed both straight into the trash.

As soon as I closed the door, I heard a faint whimper coming from downstairs.

It was quiet and shaky, like a hurt puppy trying not to cry.

I ignored it at first. But it never stopped.

I stood there for a few seconds. Then I grabbed my keys and went down.

A few flattened cardboard boxes were piled up beside the entrance.

Behind them, a dark shape was huddled into itself. A stray pup. Not very young anymore.

Its fur was so filthy I couldn’t tell what color it was supposed to be.

One of its hind legs was injured, and blood was still seeping from a wound across its belly.

Its gray-gold eyes glowed in the dark.

I stopped. I’d seen those eyes before.

The pup looked up at me. A weak whine escaped its throat.

It wanted to come closer. It just didn’t have the strength.

I frowned. “You?”

It didn’t answer.

It dragged its injured leg forward and nuzzled against my pant leg. Once. Then again. Like it was begging me not to leave.

I looked down at it.

One word filled my mind. Trouble.

I’d just been torn apart by one wolf. Now another one had found me.

But when it rubbed against my leg again, I couldn’t make myself walk away.

I closed my eyes. Then I bent down and lifted it into my arms.

“Last time,” I whispered. “I swear, this is the last time I let my heart get the better of me.”
