I Saved An Amnesiac Werewolf, Then Found A New Loyal Wolf Chapter 05

The stray pup was heavier than it looked. Its body burned with fever as I carried it inside.

I dug out some antiseptic and gauze, then crouched on the floor to clean its wounds.

It stayed perfectly still. From beginning to end, it never struggled.

It only watched me, its graygold eyes unblinking.

Halfway through wrapping the bandages, a sharp pain twisted through my stomach again.

My hand jerked, nearly sending the bottle of

antiseptic crashing to the floor.

The pup suddenly lifted a paw and tapped the

drawer behind me. I blinked.

When I pulled it open, I found my stomach.

medicine inside.

Then it glanced at the glass of water on the table.

I stared at it for a long moment.

You’rereminding me to take my medicine?”

It just watched me, those graygold eyes

unblinking.

I took the pills. A few minutes later, the pain finally

eased.

I finished bandaging its wounds.

You can stay here tonight. Once you’re healed up

tomorrow, you leave.”

My voice went flat. I’m not taking in another

ungrateful bastard.”

The words had barely left my mouth when a deep

voice came from the bathroom. I’m not

ungrateful.”

My head snapped up.

The stray pup was gone. A tall man stood in the

bathroom doorway. His wet black hair clung to his

forehead.

A towel hung loosely around his waist, and fresh

blood was soaking through the bandages

wrapped around his abdomen.

He looked at me with the same graygold eyes.

My mind went blank. You”

I just need to hide here for one night.”

He glanced down at the towel around his waist,

completely composed.

Got any clothes I can borrow?”

I nearly laughed out of sheer disbelief.

The man had just turned from a wolf into a

human, and the first thing he asked for was a

change of clothes.

I grabbed an old Tshirt and a pair of sweatpants

from the closet and tossed them to him.

Put those on.”

He caught them easily.

Then his gaze shifted to the trash can. To the

invitation I’d thrown away.

You’re going to that gala?”

I followed his eyes.

After a long silence, I reached in and pulled it back

out.

The black cardstock with its gold lettering felt.

painfully familiar.

I slowly tightened my grip.

Yes.”

He looked at me.

To bow your head? Or to raise hell?”

I met his gaze.

To make him regret it.”

The night of the Lineage Gala, I didn’t wear the

dress Lilith had sent me.

The silver gown was still lying in the trash.

Instead, I put on the nicest white blouse and black

skirt I owned.

I stood in front of the mirror for a moment.

My face was pale. There were shadows under my

eyes I couldn’t hide.

At least I was still standing.

Caelan Ashford leaned against the doorway,

watching me.

He’d changed into the clothes I’d given him.

Even a plain black Tshirt looked sharp on him.

The wound across his abdomen hadn’t fully

healed, but he acted as though he couldn’t feel it.

I was adjusting my cuff when he spoke.

If they try to break youcall me.”

My hand paused. I looked up at him.

You’ll come?”

His graygold eyes held mine, steady and sure.

I will.”

I didn’t ask another question.

I picked up my bag and left.

The entrance to The Obsidian Hall blazed with

light.

I had barely stepped onto the stairs when a staff

member stopped me.

Miss, may I see your invitation?”

People nearby had already started looking over.

Before I could answer, Lilith walked over in a pair

of high heels.

She wore a silverwhite gown, flawless from head

to toe. Only her smile was cold.

Oh dear, how forgetful of me.”

She looked me over, taking her time.

It’s Miss Kaine’s first time somewhere like this.”

I suppose she doesn’t know how things work.”

She took the invitation from my hand and passed it to the attendant.

Let her in. After all, tonight’s little show wouldn’t

be complete without her.”

Quiet laughter rippled through the crowd.

I ignored it and walked inside.

The ballroom glittered with crystal lights. It was packed.

The moment I walked in, every eye turned toward

  1. me. Some looked curious, others dismissive or

amused.

Every look made me feel more uncomfortable.

Draven stood at the front of the room.

Dressed in a tailored black suit, he was

surrounded by several elder members of the pack.

The moment our eyes met, his brow furrowed.

After the host finished the opening remarks, Lilith

suddenly took the microphone with a smile.

Before tonight’s Lineage Gala officially begins,

there’s something I’d like to clear up.”

A sinking feeling settled in my stomach.

Here it came.

Her eyes landed on me.

Miss Kaine. Since you’re here, why don’t you come

up and tell everyone yourself?
