My Husband’s Cooking Bites Me Chapter 05
“Babe, what’s wrong?”Â
Thomas’s voice suddenly came from behind me.Â
I quickly fixed my expression, pulled some iceÂ
water from the fridge, and gulped it down.Â
My teeth chattered from the cold, and my heartÂ
hammered in my chest.Â
I forced a smile.Â
“Nothing.”Â
“My mouth was burning, that’s all.”Â
Thomas frowned.Â
“Your stomach’s already acting up.”Â
“Don’t drink that stuff ice–cold.”Â
As he spoke, his eyes drifted toward the fridge.Â
He opened his mouth like he wanted to askÂ
something.Â
But he stopped himself.Â
“I’m taking you back to the doctor tomorrow.”Â
I pressed my lips together and looked straight intoÂ
his eyes.Â
Other than that brief flash of panic I’d caughtÂ
earlier, there was nothing unusual in hisÂ
expression.Â
I knew there was nothing wrong with my body, so I hadn’t planned on going back to the hospital.Â
But then I remembered what I’d seen inside the fridge.Â
I changed my mind.Â
I needed more tests.Â
Early the next morning, Thomas went with me toÂ
the hospital.Â
They drew four tubes of blood.Â
While we waited for the results, Thomas keptÂ
running around, taking care of everything.Â
Even the woman sitting beside me lookedÂ
impressed.Â
“Newlyweds?”Â
I looked at her.Â
She nodded toward Thomas.Â
“Your husband’s really taking care of you.”Â
I looked at his back and said nothing.Â
Thomas and I had been college sweethearts.Â
We got married right after graduation.Â
All these years, our marriage had always beenÂ
good.Â
When I was pregnant, my morning sickness hadÂ
been severe.Â
Every time I was bent over throwing up, Thomas would stand behind me.Â
“You’ve been through enough.”Â
“I’ve got you.”Â
“You and the baby.”Â
“Always.”Â
And it wasn’t just once.Â
Whenever something went wrong with my health.Â
Whenever work became too stressful.Â
Even when our son acted up and deliberatelyÂ
tested my patience.Â
Thomas always handled everything.Â
Just like Mom had said.Â
Finding a man like him was a blessing.Â
I lowered my head.Â
But the image of what I’d seen the night before.Â
kept flashing through my mind.Â
For the first time, I wondered.Â
Was marrying Thomas really a blessing?Â
Just then, Thomas came back with all my testÂ
results.Â
Everything was still normal.Â
He put an arm around my shoulders.Â
“Still sounds like stress.”Â
“Come on.”Â
“Let’s try Integrative Medicine.”Â
I gave him a faint smile and followed him to the Integrative Medicine department on the secondÂ
floor.Â
But one question wouldn’t leave me alone.Â
Was all this concern real?Â
Or was he putting on an act?Â
Because if there really was nothing wrong with Thomas…Â
Then how could I explain what I’d seen in the fridge?Â
The specialist prescribed a course of herbal medicine and told me to get plenty of rest.Â
I was supposed to come back the following week for another checkup.Â
I took two weeks off work.Â
I had planned to use that time to figure out theÂ
truth.Â
But Thomas never gave me the chance.Â
While I was home, he took incredibly good care ofÂ
- me.Â
Whatever I needed, he brought right to myÂ
bedside.Â
Even when I wanted to use the bathroom, heÂ
followed me.Â
He said he was afraid I’d pass out again.Â
But his care was starting to feel less like concern.Â
More like surveillance.Â
It left me with no chance to get near the kitchen fridge again.Â
So whenever Thomas was busy with our son during the day, I slept as much as I could.Â
Then I waited until night.Â
Until he couldn’t stay awake anymore.Â
Until he fell asleep.Â
Finally, I had my chance.Â
I quietly slipped out of the bedroom.
