My Husband’s Cooking Bites Me Chapter 06

My Husband’s Cooking Bites Me Chapter 06

I didn’t even turn on the light.

I carefully shut the kitchen door behind me and

opened the fridge.

The thing I’d seen before was tucked away in the

back corner.

I slowly moved everything piled over it out of the

way.

Just as my fingers touched the container, a voice

came from behind me.

Babe, what are you doing in the kitchen this late?”

My whole body jerked.

Only then did I realize Thomas was standing

behind me without making a sound.

In the dark, he looked like a demon, as if he could

swallow me into the darkness at any second.

I was terrified.

But I still forced a smile and held up the ice water

in my hand.

I haven’t felt right since dinner. It got really bad

just now, so I came for some ice water.”

Thomas walked toward me.

The doctor told you to stay away from anything

icecold. Come on, babe. You need to listen to the

doctor.”

Okay. I know.”

He took my hand and led me back to the bedroom.

Even after I lay down again, my heart was still

pounding.

Thomas had always been a heavy sleeper.

He needed three alarms just to wake up in the

morning.

I’d clearly heard his slow, even breathing before I

got out of bed.

So why had he woken up at the exact moment I

reached the fridge?

Unless…

Had he been pretending?

I knew Thomas was hiding something.

And now I knew it had something to do with me.

My body wouldn’t stop trembling.

I had to find a chance to figure out the truth.

It was almost morning before I finally felt sleepy.

When I woke up, it was already eleven.

Thomas brought me a bowl of vegetable soup.

It looked light and healthy, the kind of thing that

should’ve been easy on my stomach.

But the second I saw it, my body started reacting

again.

Babe, I know you’re not feeling well, so I made your

some vegetable soup. Have a little, then take your

herbal medicine.”

I stared at the steaming soup, and a sudden wave

of hurt washed over me.

Before I found what he’d hidden in the fridge, I’d

kept quiet about how bad I felt because I was

afraid of hurting his pride.

Now that I knew he was the reason I felt this way, I

still couldn’t say a word.

I was afraid he’d realize I’d figured something out.

After all these years together, I couldn’t even tell him the truth anymore.

When it was finally time to settle the score, I wouldn’t go easy on him.

I forced down the burning sensation and drank

half the bowl of soup.

Then I told Thomas I had some work to handle

and shut myself inside the study.

The first thing I did was contact a private

investigator.

[I need you to look into my husband. How soon

can you get it done?]

The reply came almost immediately.

[One day.]

I deleted the chat history with the private investigator.

Then I spent the rest of the day lying on the

balcony lounger in the sun.

By sunset, Thomas came over and draped a

blanket around me.

Ellie, why are you crying?”

I wiped the corner of my eye.

Only then did I realize I really was crying.

Nothing. I had a dream about when we first met.”

Things were so good back then.”

Thomas fell quiet, like he was remembering it too.

After a while, he said,

Yeah. They were.”

I still remember when we first started working

after graduation. My supervisor chewed me out my very first month.”

You worked your butt off for three months, landed

a project he’d been after, and nailed it.”

After that, you became my manager. Nobody

gave me a hard time anymore.”

Then you quit when we had our son. People at work started giving me a hard time again, and eventually I got fired.”

Thomas lowered his head.

Ellie”

I’m pretty useless, aren’t I?”

No.”

Never.”

I smiled faintly.

And I meant it.
