I looked up in surprise.
Outside the café window, a tall man was standing there.
I had no idea when he’d even shown up. His dark eyes were fixed on me without blinking, like some beast lurking in the shadows.
Through the glass, he mouthed silently at me.
“Baby.”
“Who is he?”
I flinched.
But I quickly pulled myself together.
Weren’t we here to break the bond?
So what if I was scouting for the next one ahead of time? That wasn’t a problem, right?
After reassuring the cat shifter, I walked outside with a weird knot of guilt in my stomach.
“Mr. Kael, why are you back?”
Kael stared at me, his pupils trembling slightly. He looked like he was about to shatter.
“…Ms. Hart. Who is he? You haven’t answered me.”
I rubbed my nose awkwardly.

“Sorry you had to see that, but I didn’t expect you to come back…”
Kael repeated softly, “A shifter you set up a date with… beforehand.”
I nodded. “Yeah. Since we’re breaking the bond today, I figured I’d get a head start and find the next one as soon as possible.”
“By the way, aren’t you busy anymore?”
Kael gave a faint smile. “…Ah. I suddenly got a headache, so I thought I’d come back and rest for a bit.”
“Headache? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
I tensed up immediately.
Kael had injured his head in the first place, and now he had a headache again. That was not a good sign.
Kael swayed on his feet, his voice weak.
“It’s nothing… probably just some aftereffects. It’s fine.”
“Sorry for interrupting. I’ll head back to the Alliance now.”
He turned to leave, but after a few steps, he stumbled and braced himself against the wall.
I’d been about to go back into the café. Seeing that, I hurried over and steadied him.
“Mr. Kael, are you alright?”
“If you’re not feeling well, let me take you back.”

Kael coughed softly, his brow furrowed.
“Are you sure you don’t mind?”
“I’ll be fine… I can wait here. My Beta will come pick me up.”
I said, “Oh? Really?”
Kael said flatly, “Yeah. He’s in a meeting. Should be free in about seven or eight hours.”
I was silent.
I let out a resigned sigh, looked up, and gently looped my arm through his.
“Alright, fine. I’ll take you back. Okay?”
This time, Kael was silent.
His ears turned red, little by little.
He nodded silently.
I focused on pulling up the route to the Alliance Tower.
I didn’t notice at all.
While I wasn’t looking, the Sclass shifter quietly glanced back over his shoulder.
He cast a cold, deliberate look behind him, and the corner of his mouth curled up into a faint, possessive smirk.
“Tch.”

The wildness in his eyes was pure warning.
It scared that timid little cat shifter so badly he popped straight back into his animal form.
When I got Kael back to his place, Felix was already waiting at the door.
His eyes lit up the moment he saw me.
He raised his phone discreetly and snapped a picture of me and Kael together, letting out some kind of ecstatic whisper.
“I knew it. My ship is absolutely real!”
I said nothing.
I gave Felix a quick rundown of what happened today, then left.
It wasn’t until right before bed that I got another message from Felix, his tone suddenly cautious.
[Elena, you’re the Admiral’s wife. But I heard you met another shifter today?]
[What’s going on… the Admiral’s been, well, brooding ever since he got back.]
I frowned at the way he’d addressed me.
Even though Kael and I hadn’t officially broken up today, it was going to happen sooner or later.
Felix was his Beta. Calling me “Admiral’s wife” wasn’t proper anymore.
