I Loved You Through Seven Losses Chapter 08
Three years later, my suitcase wheels hummedÂ
across the polished floor.Â
A broad–shouldered man in a dark coat took theÂ
handle from me.Â
“Ms. Reed. I’m Liam. The Badlands assignment isÂ
closed, and Command assigned me as yourÂ
personal security.”Â
I glanced at his credentials and nodded.Â
Three years out in the Badlands had worn everyÂ
soft thing off my old life.Â
My skin had gone brown, and my hands were fullÂ
of calluses. I wore my scars like armor.Â
In that other life, I had turned down the Council’sÂ
offer for Asher’s sake.Â
I had wanted something quiet and ordinary. I hadÂ
wanted to be a mate and a mother.Â
I had been such a fool. That life was neverÂ
anything but a cage.Â
This time, I chose to live for myself from the veryÂ
first day.Â
Liam was walking me toward the private exit when two figures came shoving out of the crowd.Â
“Roxie!”Â
“Roxie!”Â
I stopped.Â
Asher and Garrett stood there, both of them yearsÂ
older, hollowed out and worn down.Â
Liam stepped forward at once. “Stop there.Â
Identify yourselves.”Â
Asher’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you?”Â
Garrett flushed with anger. “You dare block myÂ
way? I’m her brother!”Â
“Doesn’t matter,” Liam said flatly, and his hand slid toward the weapon at his hip.Â
I gave Liam a nod.Â
He fell back to a spot that kept a polite distance, close enough to step in, far enough to let us talk.Â
“Roxie… he isn’t…?” Asher’s eyes moved betweenÂ
the two of us, and jealousy flickered through theÂ
gold.Â
“That has nothing to do with you,” I said coldly.Â
“What are you doing here?”Â
Asher’s face crumpled with pain.Â
“Roxie, we’ve spent three years paying for it. I don’tÂ
sleep.”Â
“Every time I close my eyes, I see you. Give me oneÂ
more chance. I swear to you…”Â
“I don’t care,” I cut in. “We ended three years ago.Â
Go find something else to obsess over.”Â
I turned to Garrett. “And you. I don’t recognize youÂ
as family.”Â
“Our parents would understand. If you want myÂ
share of the inheritance, talk to my lawyer.”Â
Garrett reached out to me, and his fingertips wereÂ
trembling. “Roxie… you’d really cut off your ownÂ
brother?”Â
Asher grabbed my arm. “I never accepted thatÂ
rejection! Under Pack law, we’re still mates.”Â
I threw his hand off, out of patience. “Fine. Let meÂ
tell you a story.”Â
I laid it out for them in a few sentences.Â
The bet, the poison, the seven pups who neverÂ
made it, and the night our parents died.Â
The color drained from both men’s faces until theyÂ
were as white as paper.Â
Later that night, my phone rang on an encryptedÂ
line.Â
“Garrett lost control of his car on the cliff road andÂ
died at the scene. Asher was in the passengerÂ
seat.”Â
The report came with a photo of the wreck and aÂ
note that had been pinned to the dashboard.Â
[Maybe dying is the only way either of us gets toÂ
start over.]Â
I looked at that line for a long time, and I didn’t say anything. Then I set the phone down.Â
However many times I had to relieve in, I wouldÂ
take the same road.Â
It was the road that saved me once, and would goÂ
on saving me a thousand times over.
