Missing for Twenty Years, I Found My Mafia Father in a Nightclub Chapter 05
I lifted my head and looked at Vincent.Â
Blood ran down my temple as I asked in a voiceÂ
barely above a whisper. “Dad, do you really notÂ
recognize me?”Â
My consciousness was slipping away.Â
I tried to look at him for one more second, butÂ
darkness swallowed me before I could.Â
In my dream, my father carried me on hisÂ
shoulders.Â
I laughed and shouted, “Higher, Dad! Make me flyÂ
even higher!”Â
He tilted his head back to look at me, and the scarÂ
at his right temple stood out clearly beneath theÂ
sunlight.Â
“Hold on tight. Daddy will lift you higher.”Â
Then the dream changed.Â
A black cloth covered my eyes.Â
I smelled a harsh chemical odor and heard myÂ
father shouting my name through the chaoticÂ
crowd.Â
He called again and again, his voice growingÂ
farther away each time.Â
For twenty years, I had heard that voice in myÂ
nightmares.Â
Every time I woke, I could still remember exactlyÂ
how he had called for me that day.Â
The first couple who bought me lived on theÂ
outskirts of a city.Â
They forced me to call them Mom and Dad.Â
When I refused, they beat me and quickly sold meÂ
again.Â
Later, I was sent to an isolated farm in theÂ
mountains.Â
An old woman once dug her fingers into my armÂ
and said. “Keep her for a few more years, and she’llÂ
fetch a much higher price.”Â
Before the old bruises could fade, new onesÂ
appeared.Â
But I never forgot the lullaby my father had sungÂ
to me.Â
Every night, I used those few lines to soothe myselfÂ
to sleep.Â
I could no longer remember everything thatÂ
happened afterward.Â
I only remembered that I had refused to cry.Â
I did not cry when I escaped from the farm.Â
I did not cry when construction work rubbed myÂ
fingers raw.Â
I always believed that as long as I saved enoughÂ
money, I could return to my father’s arms andÂ
wrap my arms around his neck the way I hadÂ
when I was little.Â
Then the door to the nightclub’s private loungeÂ
appeared in my dream.Â
Dad stood behind the scattered cash, looking at meÂ
with pity and distance in his eyes.Â
“Young lady, it’s wrong to lie your way into a worldÂ
you weren’t born into.”Â
I stood far away and watched Bianca cling to hisÂ
arm, cooing at him the way she always did.Â
He looked straight through me as though I wereÂ
not even in the room.Â
Then the dream dissolved into darkness.Â
I dreamed that the people who had once held meÂ
captive caught me again.Â
They called me worthless and filthy over and over,Â
telling me I had no right to carry the MorettiÂ
name.Â
I tried to run, but my feet would not move.Â
“Dad!”Â
I screamed and opened my eyes.Â
The first thing I saw was a white ceiling, followedÂ
by the sharp smell of disinfectant.Â
Someone had fallen asleep beside my hospital bedÂ
with one hand still wrapped tightly around myÂ
wrist.Â
It was Vincent.Â
Only then did I realize I was in a hospital.Â
I stared at the scar on his right temple for a longÂ
time, unable to tell whether this was reality orÂ
another dream.Â
His fingers moved slightly before he lifted his head.Â
When our eyes met, I saw that his were swollenÂ
and red.Â
“Little Star?”Â
His voice shook so violently around the name thatÂ
it barely sounded like his own.Â
I froze for a moment before asking softly. “Is thatÂ
what you used to call me?”Â
“I’m sorry. I can’t remember my own nameÂ
anymore.”Â
Vincent’s face crumpled with pain, and the handÂ
holding mine trembled even harder.Â
“Little Star, you are my biological daughter. AfterÂ
you lost consciousness, my personal doctor and theÂ
hospital ran separate DNA tests. The blood samples.Â
were guarded by my advisers from the momentÂ
they were taken. No one had any chance to tamperÂ
with them.”Â
He handed me the test report.Â
I could not understand the complicated data.Â
All I understood was the final line: PaternityÂ
confirmed.Â
“Little Star.”Â
He said the name again, and the tears he had beenÂ
holding back finally fell.Â
“I’ve been searching for you for so long. The dayÂ
you disappeared from Bryant Park, I sealed offÂ
every exit nearby. I had my men search everyÂ
building and every street in the area.”Â
“After I became the Don of the Moretti Family, IÂ
mobilized every dock, casino, shipping company,Â
and contact I had. I sent people to search for youÂ
across North America, but I never found a singleÂ
reliable lead. I thought I’d die without ever findingÂ
you.”Â
As I listened, tears began slipping down my face.Â
too.Â
I had waited twenty years to hear those words.Â
“I understand.”Â
I closed my eyes, my voice barely audible.Â
“Give me some time to take this in, Mr. Moretti.”
