Missing for Twenty Years, I Found My Mafia Father in a Nightclub Chapter 08
The hospital room door opened again.Â
Vincent walked in carrying a bag of fruit.Â
“I had the driver take Bianca back to the estate.”Â
He stood beside the bed, unsure whether to sitÂ
down or keep explaining.Â
After hesitating for a moment, he pulled over aÂ
chair and sat.Â
“Little Star, let me explain. Bianca really has stayedÂ
by my side all these years. I admit I favored herÂ
because I kept treating her as a substitute for you.”Â
“I searched for you for so long that I thought IÂ
would die without ever seeing you again. I onlyÂ
wanted to take care of another girl who had noÂ
family to support her. I thought that maybe, if IÂ
did that, God would let me see you again.”Â
I did not know what to say, so I turned toward theÂ
window.Â
A bird landed on the windowsill, then quickly flewÂ
away.Â
Just wait a little longer.Â
Give me a little more time.Â
On the day I was discharged, Vincent came to pickÂ
me up himself.Â
He wore a clean shirt, and his hair was neatlyÂ
combed.Â
He looked far more put together than he had overÂ
the past few days.Â
“Little Star, I’m taking you home.”Â
But I had no memory of that home at all.Â
The car left Manhattan and eventually passedÂ
through the gates of the Moretti estate on LongÂ
Island.Â
As the tall iron gates opened, the guards liningÂ
both sides bowed their heads in unison.Â
Several of them kept staring at my ordinaryÂ
clothes, clearly doubtful of my identity.Â
They had already heard that the Don had foundÂ
his biological daughter, yet they still could notÂ
believe that a woman they considered beneathÂ
them, someone who had worked as a club hostess,Â
was now the Moretti Family’s only legitimate heir.Â
The moment I entered the living room, I saw anÂ
entire wall covered with photographs.Â
Most of them showed the same little girl feedingÂ
pigeons in Central Park, laughing on a carousel, orÂ
attending a gala for her mother’s foundation in aÂ
tiny formal dress.Â
The photographs had yellowed around the edges,Â
and some were creased.Â
Only when I stepped closer did I realize that theÂ
girl was me.Â
Beside the photographs were countless missingÂ
person flyers.Â
The earliest one listed my height, weight, and theÂ
clothes I had been wearing when I disappeared.Â
The later images were computer–generated ageÂ
progressions showing what I might look like as IÂ
grew older.Â
Vincent carefully pointed at them.Â
“I had a new set made every year. I was afraid yourÂ
face would change as you grew older, and I wasÂ
terrified the age–progressed images might beÂ
wrong. I kept thinking that even if you cameÂ
home, you might not look anything like the personÂ
in those pictures.”Â
He studied my face, and his eyes gradually turnedÂ
red.Â
“Little Star, you look exactly like Isabella.”Â
I did not want him to see how close I was to tears.Â
so I turned away and asked, “Which room am IÂ
staying in?”Â
He immediately led me upstairs.Â
The bedroom had pale pink sheets, and severalÂ
stuffed animals sat beside the bed.Â
“I don’t know what you like now. Pink was yourÂ
favorite color when you were little, so I preparedÂ
the room this way for now. If you don’t like it, I’llÂ
have everything changed tomorrow.”Â
Looking at everything in front of me. I nearly burstÂ
into tears.Â
“Thank you.”Â
Over the next few days, my life gradually settledÂ
into a routine.Â
Vincent handled Family business during the day, but he always rushed back to the estate in time toÂ
have dinner with me.Â
He bought me clothes so expensive that I would never have dared to look at their price tags before. and he got me a new phone and computer.Â
He even postponed a Family council meeting and personally took me to sort out my birth certificate,Â
Social Security records, and state ID.Â
“Your birth record is still on file. The police neverÂ
closed your missing person case either.”Â
“Once everything is complete, you’ll officially beÂ
Erin Moretti. You are my daughter, the daughter recognized by this Family, and my only legitimateÂ
heir.”Â
I knew he was explaining Bianca’s position to me.Â
Bianca did not appear for several days.Â
Then one day, while I was talking to Mia in myÂ
room, an argument suddenly broke outÂ
downstairs.Â
“Dad, what exactly are you trying to do? Are you planning to spend all your time with her andÂ
never care about me again?”Â
I could hear Bianca clearly even from my bedroom.Â
“Why should I have to move into a hotel justÂ
because she came back? Now that you’ve foundÂ
your biological daughter, are you planning toÂ
throw me out of the Family? If you make me leaveÂ
today. I’ll jump out of an upstairs window!”Â
I put down my phone and heard Vincent let out aÂ
weary sigh.Â
“Bianca, this is the Moretti estate. Now that myÂ
biological daughter has returned, it isn’tÂ
appropriate for you to keep living here. I’ve alreadyÂ
arranged a long–term suite for you at a hotel. YouÂ
can stay there for as long as you want.”Â
“I don’t want a hotel! I want to live here. This is myÂ
home!”
