He Left Me for My Best Friend Chapter 06
“What’s wrong?”
Chloe’s hand stayed frozen in the air after Evan pulled away.
For the first time,
Evan felt uncomfortable with the line he had crossed with another woman who was not his future partner.
“Tessa is still at the hospital.”
“I’m going to check on her.”
The snow outside was coming down heavily.
Even if they were really going to break up,
Tessa wouldn’t be able to leave right away.
Evan’s steps became faster and faster.
Several times,
he almost slipped on the snow.
When he finally reached the hospital,
the bed was empty.
A young nurse pushed a cart past him.
“The patient in Room 13 left a while ago.”
Evan was breathing heavily.
The hand against the wall slowly tightened into a fist.
“Did she say where she was going?”
The nurse thought for a moment before answering.
“Maybe head home? Or go somewhere?”
“She looked happy when she left.”
Evan sat on the empty hospital bed.
Again and again,
he called Tessa’s number.
Every time he spoke,
all he heard was the emotionless automated voice on the line.
On the thirtieth call,
his number was blocked.
Then every social media account where they followed each other was blocked too.
Evan had never imagined that the girl who had followed him since childhood,
who had always stayed by his side,
would leave his world this way.
Several patients who had secretly walked out stood by the window watching the snow.
“Is there going to be a mountain closure because of this severe weather?”
“The snow is really heavy.”
“Everyone might be unable to get into town.”
“If that’s really happening…”
“Hey! What’s wrong with you?!”
Evan suddenly stood up.
The two patients were startled.
But after seeing his dark expression,
they quickly fell silent.
He rushed back to the hotel.
Then he stuffed everything he saw into his suitcase.
His phone fell onto the carpet.
The screen lit up and flashed a few times.
Evan picked it up.
But when he saw the name,
his expression changed.
He put it back down.
Three minutes later,
someone knocked on the door.
“Evan?”
“Do you have any medicine?”
“My head feels dizzy. So cold.”
It was Chloe’s voice.
But never before had hearing her voice annoyed Evan this much.
If it wasn’t for her…
Would everything have been different?
He would have had a perfect road trip with Tessa.
Then Tessa would have married him.
Wasn’t that the plan from the beginning?
The suite was warm.
But Evan’s mind went blank.
His body kept moving on instinct.
Suddenly,
the door made a beep sound and opened.
Chloe hurried over.
Her cheeks were flushed.
She really seemed to have a fever.
“Where are you going?”
Evan didn’t even look up.
“To find Tessa.”
He pulled up his suitcase.
But Chloe grabbed onto the suitcase handle.
“NO!”
“The snow outside is too heavy!”
“Tessa is just upset!”
“I can apologize to her!”
“It’s all my fault!”
Chloe’s eyes turned red.
She unlocked her phone.
But ten seconds later,
she looked up in confusion.
“She…”
“She blocked me…”
Evan stayed silent and tried to leave.
But Chloe wrapped her arms around his waist.
He forcefully pulled himself free.
Then he turned around and slapped her.
“Chloe!”
“Do you even feel sorry for what happened?”
“Do you feel sorry for Tessa?!”
Evan stared coldly at Chloe’s pale cheek.
A red mark slowly appeared on her skin.
Through clenched teeth, he said,
He thought back to the slap he had just given Tessa.
He had never hit her before.
In his twenty-something years of life,
Evan rarely cared about many things.
But there was one thing he always remembered.
Tessa was afraid of pain.
When she was eight,
he took her to play in the water.
After they came home,
she developed a fever and needed an injection.
The nurse chased her through an entire floor.
She refused to get the shot.
In the end,
Evan was the one who found her and brought her back.
The needle was tiny.
It only took a few seconds.
But the little girl cried from the pain for half an hour.
The doctor told them:
“Tessa is more sensitive to pain than most people.”
“Something that would only bother others for a short time could hurt her for more than a week.”
