He Left Me for My Best Friend Chapter 05

“Creamy Mushroom Soup.”

“Your favorite.”

“Tessa, you had a fever.”

“You didn’t have to go up the mountain.”

“Why didn’t you tell us sooner?”

“You’re not a kid anymore!”

“Can’t you take care of yourself?”

I looked at the bowl of soup.

My throat was already too sore to explain anything.

I could only move the spoon around,

stirring the mushrooms inside.

But I couldn’t bring myself to take a bite.

Evan glanced at me impatiently.

Then he picked up the bowl,

scooped up a spoonful,

and moved it toward my mouth.

I turned my head away.

“I don’t eat mushrooms.”

“What?”

“How is that possible?”

“You clearly…”

Chloe reached out to take the bowl.

“Can you two stop arguing?!”

“Ah!”

The entire bowl of soup spilled.

Most of it landed on the hospital bed.

Evan immediately panicked.

“OMG, Chloe!”

“Are you okay?!”

Chloe’s eyes filled with tears.

She took off her stained jacket,

then wiped her hands with a tissue.

“I’m fine…”

“I should’ve come with you guys.”

“This is my fault…”

“You don’t have to fight because of me.”

“I’ll leave.”

She reached out and gently hugged me.

And that was when I saw it.

A kiss mark on her neck.

For a moment,

our eyes met.

And I understood the meaning behind her gaze.

My fever-clouded mind suddenly filled with anger.

I raised my hand.

And slapped her hard across the face.

“Tessa!”

The next second,

Evan raised his hand.

And slapped me.

I covered my cheek.

For a moment,

I couldn’t hear anything.

Evan chased after Chloe as she walked out.

Before leaving,

he turned back.

“Have you lost your mind?!”

“She’s your best friend!”

I let out a quiet laugh.

The hand covering half of my face felt damp.

Then a notification appeared on my phone.

My train would leave in three hours.

I knew it.

I really had to leave.

Evan followed Chloe back to the hotel.

He stayed with her until she fell asleep.

Then he picked up his phone,

wanting to send Tessa a message.

He stared at their chat.

Then he noticed the two voice messages Tessa had sent before they left that morning.

He had only listened to one.

He tapped the first one.

“You two go ahead. I’m not coming.”

Evan suddenly realized he had blamed her for something she never did.

His heartbeat became chaotic.

It started racing.

He quickly opened the second unread voice message.

“Evan, let’s break up. We’re not right for each other.”

Evan’s mind went completely blank.

He tapped the screen again.

Tessa’s familiar voice came through.

But it wasn’t playful.

It wasn’t gentle.

“Evan, let’s break up. We’re not right for each other.”

Evan wanted to laugh.

But he couldn’t.

Tessa’s voice had always been beautiful.

But what was she saying?

What did she mean by they weren’t right for each other?

Evan had never thought about it before.

Being with her made him happy.

He loved holding her.

He loved kissing her.

Wasn’t that what being right for each other meant?

They had known each other since kindergarten.

He knew everything about Tessa’s past.

He never needed to ask anyone else.

Who could possibly be more suitable for her than him?

The half-open bedroom door moved.

From inside,

Chloe called out softly.

“Evan?”

“Are you there?”

“Yes…”

Evan was startled by how hoarse his own voice sounded.

He pushed open the door.

Chloe was already sitting up.

Her loose pajamas revealed the red mark on her neck.

The kiss mark.

The one Evan had left that morning.

Last night,

Chloe had asked him to wake her up.

That morning,

he opened her door.

After tapping her a few times,

Chloe wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him onto the bed.

The lights were off.

But he could still see her dark, shining eyes.

Without knowing why,

he lowered his head and left a mark on her neck.

The moment he did it,

he was shocked.

But Chloe didn’t care.

She only laughed and teased him for still being half asleep.

Neither of them had ever told Tessa.

Evan had always thought it wasn’t a big deal.

But now,

a thought suddenly crossed his mind.

Was this why Tessa wanted to break up with him?

In the darkness,

Chloe reached out and grabbed his hand.

But Evan forcefully pulled away.
