Because of the extreme temperature difference between day and night,
I started running a slight fever.
While waiting for the driver,
my mind slowly became foggy.
When I finally came back to my senses,
my phone was filled with missed calls.
I couldn’t see who had called.
I simply tapped the callback button.
“Tessa, why didn’t you follow us?”
“What the hell have you been doing?”
The voice coming through the phone overlapped with the voice right in front of me.
That was when I saw Evan standing there.
His expression was dark.
The moment he saw the suitcase beside me,
he shouted.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“Why didn’t you come after us?”
“Chloe couldn’t reach you just now.”
“She was worried about you.”
“Then she fell down the mountain looking for you!”
“And now she’s still missing!”
I shook my head.
Then I slowly checked through all the missed calls.
“She didn’t call me..”
Before I could finish,
Evan knocked my phone out of my hand.
It fell into the snow.
Evan stared at me with a cold gaze.
“Tessa, Are you mad at me?”
“Because I brought Chloe along on this trip?”
“She’s gone! This is on you!”
“And you’re still playing dumb?”
“You’d let your best friend get hurt?!”
“I didn’t know you were like this!”
Both sides of my temples throbbed.
I rubbed them gently.
Then I bent down and picked up my phone.
“Yes, I am.”
“If that’s what you believe.”
I pulled up my suitcase and turned to leave.
But Evan grabbed my wrist.
“Wait!”
“You’re leaving?”
“No way!”
“You’re coming with me to find her.”
Evan was much stronger than me.
And I was already running a fever.
My whole body felt weak.
Before I could even put on another layer,
he pulled me up the mountain.
The Mountain Rescue Team had already arrived.
But the wind had started getting stronger,
and the visibility dropped quickly.
Evan held onto me.
The entire way,
the only sound was our breathing.
He frowned and looked back at me.
“Damn.”
“You’re so hot.”
“How many hand warmers did you use?”
“Your hands are way too hot.”
My lips had gone pale,
and I could barely force out a word.
“None.”
Evan scoffed.
“Bullshit!”
After walking another hundred meters,
the snowstorm grew stronger.
The visibility dropped to less than one meter.
Suddenly,
through the howling wind,
we heard someone crying.
I didn’t even have time to figure out who it was.
My hand was suddenly pulled away.
“Chloe!”
“I’m here!”
The snow was thick,
but it wasn’t solid enough to support me.
My foot slipped.
I fell backward.
Then I rolled nearly ten meters down the slope.
I didn’t stop until my back slammed hard against a rock.
In the blurry snowstorm,
I could barely keep my eyes open.
But I saw Evan carrying Chloe on his back.
Their figures blurred together in the storm.
The wind was roaring.
Chloe shouted beside his ear.
“Tessa?”
“Where’s Tessa?”
“Is she okay?”
Evan looked around.
There was no sign of me.
“Forget about her for now.”
“You’re the one who matters.”
When I woke up,
I was lying in a hospital in Pinecrest Mountain Town.
Chloe’s eyes were red.
She held my hand tightly.
“Oh!”
“You’re finally awake.”
“I was so worried about you!”
“It’s all my fault!”
“I couldn’t reach you because there was no signal on the mountain.”
“And then I accidentally slipped and fell down the slope.”
“He shouldn’t have brought you up there.”
“He was crazy!”
I just lay there and listened.
I didn’t say anything.
Not until Chloe finally stopped talking.
“Tessa?”
“Does your throat hurt?”
“Why aren’t you saying anything?”
“Don’t make excuses for her.”
“She has nothing to say.”
“She’s the one who did something wrong.”
Evan walked in.
He was carrying a bowl of soup.
