He Left Me for My Best Friend Chapter 03
Until his phone vibrated softly.
He glanced at it,
then shook his head helplessly.
“Chloe doesn’t have any hand warmers.”
“I’ll bring some to her.”
He bent down,
took a large pack of hand warmers from my suitcase,
and walked to the room next door.
I lowered my head and looked at the two hand warmers left in my bag.
Somehow,
I felt colder than before.
I suddenly remembered the time I forgot to bring my pajamas after taking a shower.
They were right beside Evan.
But he was too lazy to get up and bring them to me.
Now,
Chloe’s room was more than ten steps away.
Yet he didn’t even think twice before going.
Evan didn’t come back until two hours later.
He looked like he wanted to explain something.
But when he saw me lying on the bed with my back facing him,
he stopped.
The next morning,
when I opened my eyes,
Evan was already dressed.
He was helping Chloe fix her collar.
“Look at you.”
“You need to zip this up.”
“It’s freezing outside.”
Chloe stuck out her tongue.
Watching the scene in front of me,
I sat up.
“You two go have fun today.”
“I’m not going.”
I had already planned not to go up the mountain.
And seeing how naturally they interacted,
I suddenly felt like I would only get in their way.
“Hey, Tessa, you’re awake?”
“What were you saying?”
Chloe blinked.
Then she lightly tapped Evan’s arm.
“Tessa was calling you.”
“Say something.”
Evan smiled.
“She’s independent.”
“She’s not like you.”
“You still need me to wake you up.”
Then he turned to me.
“I was going to let you sleep a little longer.”
“But I forgot to wake you.”
“You can get ready now.”
“We can leave soon.”
He bent down and picked up their things.
“Chloe, let’s go first.”
“We’ll wait for her downstairs.”
I stood up and looked out the window.
Chloe walked ahead.
Every now and then,
she turned around and smiled while saying something.
Evan followed behind her,
answering her with the same smile.
Normally,
when I was around,
he always seemed to have nothing to talk about.
But Evan and Chloe…
they always had endless conversations.
I didn’t like gaming.
I didn’t enjoy extreme sports.
The things Evan loved,
like cave diving, skiing, or skydiving,
were things I couldn’t really do with him.
But after being together for ten years,
I had never thought there was anything wrong with that.
People didn’t have to be exactly alike to stay together.
But now,
watching Evan smile,
I knew he was truly happy today.
Happier than spending another boring weekend with me.
Happier than drinking the cocktails I had randomly mixed for him.
Happier than he had ever been with me.
I opened my chat with Evan.
He had just asked when I was coming downstairs.
I wanted to type:
“Let’s break up.”
But my fingers felt strangely stiff.
In the end,
I could only send a voice message.
【You two go ahead. I’m not coming.】
【Evan, let’s break up. We’re not right for each other.】
He replied with one word first.
【Okay.】
Then he sent me a voice message.
【Okay, hurry up and catch up with us.】
【We’ll wait for you ahead.】
Evan was being lazy again.
Out of the two voice messages,
he only converted one into text and read half of it.
He didn’t even check the second one.
Maybe he thought the second message was just me asking them to wait for me.
That was how he had always been.
It had always been like this.
I put my phone down.
And sat there silently for a long time.
The room phone rang.
I picked it up.
“Yes.”
“I already booked a driver.”
“I’m going to the train station.”
