Evan looked surprised.
Then again, this wasn’t the first time Chloe had ended up in the passenger seat.
Every single time before this,
I would switch seats with her.
But today,
there was no need.
I glanced at him and opened the back door.
Chloe turned around and suddenly said,
“OMG! We’re seriously on the same page!”
“Pinecrest Mountain is exactly where I’ve always wanted to go.”
“I can’t believe you’re going there even though you don’t even know how to ski, Tessa.”
Evan glanced at me through the rearview mirror.
His hands stayed on the steering wheel as he casually said,
“We were originally going to the beach.”
“But she was worried about getting sunburned, so we changed our plans to Pinecrest Mountain.”
“Tessa said she wanted to learn skiing.”
Chloe listened carefully.
Then she casually pulled her hand cream out of the storage compartment.
“The beach would’ve been nice too.”
“I really love the ocean.”
“Alright, can you two quiet down for a bit?”
Evan interrupted and turned on the music.
It was the song he used as his morning alarm.
And suddenly,
I remembered the day after Evan agreed to this road trip more than a year ago.
I had been so excited that I woke up early.
After turning off his alarm,
I somehow ended up opening his messages.
Chloe had sent him a few complaints about work the night before.
I casually scrolled through them.
Then I froze.
【I really need a vacation! I really wanna go to the beach!】
【Evan, if you guys are going to the beach, can I come with you?】
Evan replied:
【Sure.】
I stared at those messages for ten minutes.
My eyes felt sore before I finally locked my phone.
Later,
when Evan woke up and hugged me from behind,
I pretended not to care and said,
“Maybe we shouldn’t go to the beach for our road trip.”
“You said I’d get sunburned, so it wouldn’t suit me, right?”
I didn’t mind Chloe coming along with us.
After all,
I had known both of them for more than ten years.
But I still couldn’t understand.
Why did Evan choose a destination that she wanted to visit?
Evan didn’t think about it for long.
He kissed me.
“Okay.”
“Then we’ll go skiing.”
“I’ll teach you.”
Thinking back on it,
I suddenly laughed in the car.
Evan turned around.
“What’s wrong?”
I shook my head.
“Nothing.”
I just thought the me from more than a year ago had been too naive.
I believed that as long as Evan was changing because of me,
that was enough.
Even though I didn’t like the beach,
and I wasn’t interested in skiing either.
I unlocked my phone.
Then I bought a ticket to another destination.
This time,
I was going somewhere I actually wanted to go.

We checked into a small town beneath Pinecrest Mountain.
We had originally planned to go skiing the next day,
but I had already decided not to go up the mountain.
So I only took my own luggage.
The ski gear stayed in the trunk.
Evan parked the car.
He looked at what I was carrying and immediately noticed.
“Hey.”
“Where’s your ski gear?”
I casually answered,
“I forgot.”
But this time,
I didn’t turn around and rush back for it like I always did.
After I checked into the room,
Evan carried the luggage inside.
When he saw me sitting on the floor searching through my suitcase,
he walked over.
“Baby.”
“Are you upset?”
I didn’t look back.
“No.”
The next second,
he pulled me up and wrapped me in his arms.
Evan’s hugs had always been warm.
They always made room for every emotion I had.
When we were younger,
I only saw him as the older kid who had always looked out for me.
Until the day he stood up to my obsessive ex-boyfriend,
then held me close and comforted me.
That was when I realized how much faster my heart could race because of him.
It was nothing like the calm rhythm of my heart now.
Evan chuckled.
“Are you jealous?”
“Because I brought Chloe along?”
“She’s your best friend.”
“Otherwise, I wouldn’t even look twice at her.”
He held my face and kissed me a few times.
“Chloe told me before that you were really jealous.”
“I didn’t believe her.”
“But I guess she was right now.”
Evan laughed again.
But that smile only made the ache in my chest grow heavier.
