He Left Me for My Best Friend Chapter 08
At the road exit leading down the mountain,
there was a roadblock.
A few workers were clearing snow nearby.
When they saw Evan’s car,
they raised their hands and shouted,
“Stop!”
“Pull over!”
“You can’t go down the mountain right now!”
Evan acted like he didn’t hear them.
His foot pressed down harder on the gas.
The workers behind him stared in shock.
The snow piled up on both sides like towering walls.
Snow kept sliding down.
Within seconds,
the car disappeared from their sight.
The car stopped in front of my house.
Noah got out first
and helped me take out my luggage.
We didn’t go very far.
So after only a few days,
we came back home.
I took the suitcase from him.
“Thank you.”
“And sorry.”
“You still had to come with me on this trip.”
Noah smiled slightly.
“It’s fine.”
“Isn’t this a date?”
“My first travel date ever.”
“Honestly?”
“Pretty exciting.”
“But didn’t you say on the first day that you didn’t want this to be a date?”
“Really?”
“I forgot.”
Noah blinked.
Then he waved at me.
“It’s cold outside.”
“Go inside.”
Noah stood there watching me
until I walked through the door.
My dad was still in the kitchen making barbecue.
When he heard the noise,
he walked out with his hands still covered in seasoning.
“So?”
“How was it with Noah?”
“Looks like you had fun.”
“I haven’t seen you smile like that in a while.”
I touched my face without realizing it.
My mom patted my back.
“You and Evan are really over this time, right?”
“Don’t contact him again.”
I pushed my suitcase back into my room.
“Yeah.”
“We’re done.”
“Completely.”
My mom still looked suspicious.
“Evan ended up in the hospital because of you.”
“Did you know that?”
She grabbed some chips while talking.
“The mountain was closed because of the storm.”
“Evan still tried to drive down to find you.”
“The snow buried his car and him together.”
“At first, I actually felt bad for him.”
“But on the third day he was in the hospital, Chloe showed up crying in his room.”
“Everyone could tell what was going on between them.”
I listened quietly.
Then I grabbed some chips too.
Seeing that my expression didn’t change,
my mom finally relaxed.
She kept eating.
“Honestly, this is a good thing.”
“Thank God we found out before you married him.”
“And Chloe didn’t exactly win either.”
“She went to see him at the hospital.”
“But Evan’s mom kicked her out.”
“She told Chloe that unless she was dead, Chloe would never marry Evan.”
“You two didn’t get married because Evan wasn’t right for you.”
“But Chloe isn’t exactly innocent either.”
After half a month,
hearing about those people and those things again,
it felt like everything had happened a lifetime ago.
I casually asked,
“What about Evan?”
“Is he still in the hospital?”
My mom slapped her thigh.
Then she pointed at her head.
“His head got hurt.”
“His memory is a little messed up right now.”
“He must have lost his mind.”
“Oh.”
I mumbled.
Then I dusted off my hands and went back to my room.
That night,
I was about to close the window and go to sleep.
But I noticed a figure standing downstairs.
When that person saw me,
he smiled.
