They Made Me Confess To A Bricklayer, Then I Saw The Comments Chapter 09

I had no idea how long he’d been standing there, or how much he’d heard.

He was staring at Rowan like he wanted to destroy him.

“You took my dad’s financial records?”

Rowan stood and stepped in front of me.

“Preston, you shouldn’t have come here.”

“I asked you a question!”

Preston lunged and grabbed Rowan by the collar. “You’re nothing but a broke construction worker. You think you can go after my family?”

Rowan didn’t flinch. He just looked at him.

“You go after her family, I go after yours.”

“It’s only fair.”

Preston threw a punch. Rowan caught his wrist mid-swing.

They stood locked together, neither giving an inch.

[Fight, fight, fight!]

[Second male lead, don’t back down. Drop him!]

Rage slammed into me.

I shoved Preston back and kicked his shin for good measure. “Get off him!”

Preston stumbled back two steps and stared at me.

“You’re protecting HIM?”

“What is he to you, really? You’ve known this guy for a few weeks. I’ve known you for ten years!”

“So what if it’s been ten years?”

I stared him down. “Do I really need to list everything you did to me?”

“You humiliated me in front of the whole school, gave my car to Chloe, and now you’re trying to bankrupt my family.”

“Tell me, Preston. Why would I ever take your side?”

His jaw flexed, but nothing came out.

Rowan tugged my hand gently. “Let’s go.”

I nodded, and we headed for the door.

Preston’s voice stopped us in our tracks. “Serena!”

I didn’t turn around.

“You really don’t feel anything for me anymore?”

I stopped.

Then I turned and looked at him.

“I’m over you.”

“I have been for a long time.”

He stood there like something inside him had caved in.

I took Rowan’s hand and walked out of the building. The night air bit at my skin.

He stopped.

“Serena.”

“Yeah?”

“Did you mean what you said in there?”

“What?”

“That you’ve been over him for a long time.”

I looked him in the eye and smiled.

“Rowan, are you jealous?”

He looked away. “No.”

But his ears turned red.

I went up on my toes and kissed the corner of his mouth. “I’ve been over him for a long time.”

“Now you’re the only one I want.”

[This is so sweet I’m dying.]

[The second male lead can’t stop smiling omg.]

The next day, Rowan sent a copy of those records to Preston’s father.

The Crawfords went quiet overnight.

The customs investigation was dropped, and my dad came home.

But I knew it wasn’t over. Preston wouldn’t let it go. Neither would Chloe.

Not long after, right on cue, the reader feed lit up again.

[HEADS UP. Chloe went to see Serena’s mom.]

[She’s trying to break Serena and Rowan up.]
