He Asked How to Compensate Me While I Was Dying Chapter 06
Everyone at Fort Blackstone believed Grant lovedÂ
me more than his own life.Â
I had stayed beside him through his coma and theÂ
bleak years when the Whitaker family treated him as expendable.Â
After he rose to major general, he held a multimillion–dollar wedding and spent five years performing the role of an adoring husband.Â
At least that was what outsiders saw.Â
The truth was very different.Â
Because Mallory cried over a tactical watch, he staged my kidnapping and made me believe his child had been conceived through assault.Â
Now he remembered the empty, shattered smile I had given him when he chose Mallory at the abandoned complex.Â
It had been the calm of someone whose heartÂ
was already dead and who was finally ready toÂ
follow it.Â
The panic Grant had pushed down began clawing its way back.Â
He turned to demand an explanation, but a courierÂ
entered through the gate.Â
“Which of you is Major General Whitaker? I have anÂ
urgent package marked as Mrs. Whitaker’sÂ
personal effects.”Â
Grant frowned and reached for it. Mallory,Â
suddenly terrified, snatched it first.Â
“Grant, first a memorial and now personal effects?Â
Arden planned every bit of this. Don’t let herÂ
manipulate you. Send this man away. The holidays.Â
are almost here, and a sham funeral will poisonÂ
the whole season.”Â
Her obvious fear sharpened Grant’s expression. For the first time, he looked at her with openÂ
suspicion.Â
“What are you afraid of? Give it to me.”Â
“No. Arden is trying to destroy us because youÂ
didn’t choose her. I won’t let that bitch win.”Â
Mallory raised the envelope over the trash can, butÂ
her heel caught on a loose stone.Â
The package split open when she fell, spilling aÂ
thick stack of photographs across the courtyard.Â
The entire estate went silent.Â
A guest picked up one photograph. HerÂ
expression changed, and then every disgusted eyeÂ
turned toward Mallory.Â
“Isn’t that Mallory with General Whitaker?”Â
“They built their reputations around loving Arden,Â
yet they were sleeping together. These pictures.Â
are vile. How could they do this to her?”Â
Someone remembered the relationship post thatÂ
had circulated days earlier.Â
“I saw a post where a man punished his wifeÂ
because his family’s adopted daughter cried. HeÂ
staged an abduction, made her believe she hadÂ
been assaulted, and falsified the paternity of hisÂ
own child.”Â
“His wife developed severe depression and landedÂ
in the ICU ten times. People said it involved theÂ
Whitakers and the Bennetts, but I didn’t believeÂ
them because Grant’s devotion was famous.”Â
“Apparently it was all an act. What a disgustingÂ
bastard.”Â
Humiliated and furious, Mallory scrambled upÂ
screamed at the crowd.Â
andÂ
“Stop looking. All of you, stop!”
