He Chose His Adopted Sister, So I Left the Mafia Chapter 06
When I woke up again, I was in the hospital.Â
The doctor stood beside my bed in silence for a long time.Â
“The damage to your lumbar spine is severe. Your spinal cord isn’t completely severed, but theÂ
compression and bruising are significant. We’ll doÂ
everything we can, but no one can promise that you’ll be able to walk independently again.”Â
I looked down at my legs and realized I couldn’tÂ
feel them at all.Â
Tears slowly slid down my face.Â
My right hand was already ruined.Â
Now I’d lost the use of my legs too.Â
I would never stand at an operating table again.Â
The nurse manager stood nearby, her eyes redÂ
with anger.Â
“Adrian hasn’t come once since you fell down those stairs. Selena only sprained her ankle, butÂ
he called in the three best doctors at the MorettiÂ
Medical Center to examine her. Erin, I don’tÂ
understand. How did the man who once poundedÂ
the table at a Family meeting to defend you turnÂ
into this?”Â
I didn’t answer.Â
A few hours later, I picked up my phone.Â
I sent Adrian Selena’s original lab results, theÂ
medication batch numbers, and the system logs.Â
showing that she had secretly altered theÂ
timestamps in her medical records.Â
I added only one sentence.Â
“This is the last time I’m explaining myself.”Â
After sending it, I asked the nurse to arrange myÂ
transfer.Â
My brother Lucas had already arranged a privateÂ
jet.Â
Three years ago, he had left Chicago for Toronto.Â
We weren’t related by blood.Â
After my mother remarried, he became my brother.Â
When our parents died in a car accident, I wasÂ
sixteen and he was twenty.Â
Every relative told him to send me away.Â
He refused.Â
Later, when I went to medical school, he worked toÂ
cover my living expenses.Â
Then one day, he suddenly moved to Canada.Â
Over time, we spoke less and less.Â
But when I was hurt, he was still the first personÂ
who came for me.Â
The plane would take off in three hours.Â
I asked the nurse to wheel me away so I couldÂ
change.Â
Just then, the hospital room door was thrownÂ
open.Â
Adrian stormed inside.Â
He was still wearing the black suit from the FamilyÂ
meeting, his expression utterly cold, without atÂ
trace of warmth.Â
The nurse manager immediately spoke.Â
“Mr. Moretti, you finally decided to come. Do youÂ
even know what happened to Erin…”Â
“I know.”Â
He cut her off and threw a box of medication ontolÂ
my lap.Â
It was the HIV post–exposure medication the ERÂ
had prescribed for me that night.Â
“Explain.”Â
I froze.Â
“Why was this in your locker? Selena said you’ve been secretly taking this kind of medication for a long time. Her infection had nothing to do with the medication you prescribed. You were the one who might have been exposed, and you still treated herÂ
wound anyway.”Â
I stared at him in disbelief.Â
“Have you lost your mind?”Â
The nurse manager hurriedly stepped in.Â
“That medication was prescribed by the ER after what happened at the Drake. I personally arrangedÂ
- it. Someone broke Erin’s skin with a needle ofÂ
unknown origin.”Â
Adrian’s expression stiffened.Â
But the next second, his anger only grew worse.Â
“Who asked you to butt in? I want to hear it fromÂ
her.”Â
I braced myself against the edge of the bed.Â
“I called your name that night. You saw whatÂ
happened. You were the one who said it wasÂ
nothing.”Â
He went silent.Â
I continued.Â
“And now you’re using the medication from that incident as proof that there’s something wrongÂ
with me? Adrian, how much more disgusting canÂ
you get?”Â
His jaw tightened.Â
“Stop changing the subject. Selena found theÂ
medication in your locker. That’s a fact. And I sawÂ
the so–called evidence you sent me. It wasÂ
thorough. Almost thorough enough to fool me.”Â
Whatever hope I’d still had for him disappearedÂ
completely.Â
“So you still believe her.”Â
“I trust my Family,” he said.Â
“And everything you’ve done lately has proven thatÂ
you can’t be trusted.”Â
Those words hurt more than the fall down theÂ
stairs.Â
I suddenly laughed.Â
“Fine. Then we’re done for good.”Â
His expression darkened.Â
“The engagement is over. I won’t marry a womanÂ
who might hurt Selena.”Â
I nodded.Â
“Thank you.”Â
At those two words, he visibly paused.Â
“You think that’s the end of it? The Family medical board will formally revoke all of your privileges. Selena also wants you at the old warehouse to give a statement to the Family. Several capos will be there, and you’ll admit in front of them that you abused your position as a doctor because youÂ
were jealous of her.”Â
The nurse manager stared at him in outrage.Â
“She can’t even move her legs!”Â
Adrian didn’t even look at her.Â
“Then she can go in a wheelchair. If an outsiderÂ
wants to keep living in Moretti territory, she needsÂ
to learn how to face the consequences.”Â
I closed my eyes.Â
“I’m not going.”Â
He gave a cold laugh.Â
“This isn’t a discussion.”
