He Chose His Adopted Sister, So I Left the Mafia Chapter 11

Adrian’s expression changed instantly.

It was you.”

Lucas ignored him.

Get out.”

Selena immediately sneered.

What gives you the right to throw us out? The

lease on this clinic”

I cut her off.

It’s mine. The equipment is mine too. Every

square foot you’re standing on has nothing to do

with the Moretti Family.”

Selena’s face darkened.

Five years ago, she’d loved reminding me that.

everything I had came from Adrian.

Now she could never use that line against me

again.

Adrian spoke quietly.

Erin, I just want to make things right.”

If you really want to make things right,I said,

looking at him, stay away from me.”

He stood there for a long time.

Eventually, he turned and left.

Selena didn’t.

She stared at me, and for the first time, there was

no fake sweetness in her eyes.

You think you won? There’s one thing you’ll never

be able to change. I was the first woman Adrian.

ever loved.”

I answered calmly.

Then you two really are perfect for each other.”

For once, she had nothing to say.

Lucas let out a quiet laugh.

Selena’s face turned completely cold before she

spun around and slammed the door behind her.

That evening, Lucas placed a stack of

investigation files on my desk.

It’s all been confirmed. Selena has spent the past few years laundering money for an old capo who was exiled from the Moretti Family. There are direct links between the cards she was using, her overseas accounts, and the falsified medical

records. When she came back to Chicago five

years ago, it wasn’t just because she wanted

Adrian back. People overseas had already started investigating her.”

I flipped through several pages.

Send everything to Adrian.”

Lucas looked at me.

You’re sure?”

Yes. Whether he believes it or what he decides to

do with her has nothing to do with me.”

Lucas closed the file.

The Morettis should pay for what they did to you too.”

I reached over and rested my hand on the back of

his.

Lucas, it really doesn’t matter anymore. I don’t

want to waste the rest of my life on them.”

He studied me for a few seconds.

All right.”

But Selena had no intention of stopping.

Three days later, one of the clinic aides brought

me a cup of warm milk.

I drank only a few sips before dizziness swept

over me.

When I woke again, I was tied to a steel support

column inside an abandoned warehouse.

Cold harbor wind blew through the broken

windows, and in the distance I could hear ship

horns.

We were somewhere near the Port of Vancouver.

A few yards away, someone else was tied up too.

Selena.

She lifted her head and looked at me, no longer

bothering to hide the raw hostility in her eyes.

Why won’t you just disappear?”

I didn’t answer.

She tugged at the ropes around her wrists and

suddenly laughed.

I already had someone send Adrian a message.

He can only save one of us. I want to see who he

chooses this time.”

I stared at her.

You’re insane.”

You drove me to this!”

She screamed.

If it weren’t for you, I would’ve been Mrs. Moretti

years ago! He was supposed to be mine! You’re

nothing but an auto mechanic’s daughter. How the hell did someone like you get to beat me?”

Even now, what mattered most to her was still

where I came from.

The whole thing suddenly seemed ridiculous.

Selena, if Adrian had really wanted to marry you,

he could’ve done it five years ago. If it hadn’t been

me, it would’ve been someone else. He didn’t

refuse to marry you because of me. He refused.

because he never loved you as much as you

convinced yourself he did.”

Her expression twisted instantly.

Shut up!”

The screech of brakes sounded outside the

warehouse.

Then came pounding footsteps and the metallic

clack of guns being chambered.

The metal doors burst open.

Lucas and Adrian rushed inside almost at the

exact same moment.

Erin!”

They both shouted my name.

From the second floor, the kidnapper followed the

script Selena had arranged and yelled, You only

get to take one! The other stays here!”

Selena immediately burst into tears.

Adrian, save me! Erin planned all of this! She knew

you’d choose her, so she had me kidnapped too!”

Adrian stood completely still.

This time, unlike five years ago, he didn’t

immediately believe her.

He only looked at her.

His eyes were so cold they seemed unfamiliar.

Enough.”

Selena’s sobbing stopped.

Adrian walked toward her.

The overseas accounts. The fake medical

records. The altered lab results. The payments to

the people you planted inside the hospital. And

this warehouse tonight.”

His voice was flat.

I know everything.”

Selena’s face went deathly pale.

NoAdrian, let me explain.”

I’ve been listening to your explanations for five

years.”

His voice hardened.

Every single time, I hurt her because I believed

you. Not this time.”

He pointed at me.

I choose Erin.”

Selena completely lost control.

She screamed and tore open her coat.

Explosives were strapped around her waist.

If I can’t have him, no one can!”

She lunged toward me.

Lucas lunged toward me immediately.

But Adrian was faster.

He threw himself between Selena and me, cutting

her off before she could reach me.

The two of them crashed into the old platform

outside the warehouse.

The railing was badly rusted.

Under the force of their struggle, it gave way with

a violent crack.

Adrian looked back at me once.

There was no pleading in his eyes.

Only an apology that had come five years too late.

I’m sorry.”

The next second, he wrapped his arms around

Selena, and they both went over the railing.

Lucas lunged forward, grabbed me, and dragged

me behind a pile of abandoned oil drums.

The explosion shook the entire harbor.

Flames shot into the night sky.

Then the warehouse went completely silent.
