He Pretended to Have Amnesia and Chose My Best Friend, I Left Chapter 04
It felt like he’d torn something open inside my chest.
Something cold rushed into the place that used to feel whole.
I kept my head down so he wouldn’t see me crying.
When I spoke, I fought to keep my voice even.
“Relax.”
“She’s my best friend. I’m happy for her.”
“Why would I ever hurt her?”
Callum’s gaze lingered on me for a moment.
I could feel him studying me, deciding how much I knew.
After a beat, something in his face relaxed.
“I just meant, you’re her best friend. She’s going to need you to look after her.”
I said nothing else.
A few minutes later, Tessa asked me to come out to the living room—something about craving ice cream.
She stood there, eyes filling with tears, trying to find the words.
I looked at her. My voice was steady.
“When did it happen?”
She broke down.
“We were drunk, okay? Both of us. And I took the morning-after pill. I swear I did.”
“Maybe it was expired or fake or something, I don’t know. But it didn’t work.”
She’d never said a word about any of it.
I’d been such a fool.
I actually believed he was still confused, still lost, still the man who just needed time.
I believed she was my best friend, that she would never cross that line.
None of it was real.
I was the only one still playing by the rules.
They’d been together this whole time, and I never saw it.
Tessa dropped to her knees in front of me, hands shaking, her nails digging into her own arms.
“I’m disgusting. I know that. I betrayed you.”
“I wasn’t thinking. I swear I wasn’t thinking.”
“Just tell me to, and I’ll go to the clinic tomorrow. I’ll take care of it.”
“Don’t.”
She froze mid-sob, staring up at me.
“No, I’ll go right now… What did you just say?”
I pulled her hand away from my dress.
“The baby is innocent.”
Tessa stared at me.
“Then what about you? Maren, what are you going to do?”
Callum came out with the food.
He saw Tessa on her knees.
Tessa scrambled up.
“Callum, this isn’t what it looks like!”
“I just fell. Maren was about to help me up.”
His face darkened.
He grabbed Tessa’s arm and pulled her behind him.
“What did I just say to you?”
“She lets you stay in her home, and you pull this?”
Tessa pushed past him, putting herself between us, sobbing so hard she could barely get the words out.
“Leave her alone! It wasn’t her fault!”
Callum’s voice went flat.
“Fine. We’ll forget this happened.”
“But you’re moving out. Today.”
“Tessa’s pregnant. She doesn’t need the extra stress in her own house.”
Tessa went rigid.
She turned to look at me, searching my face.
“Fine.”
I walked straight to the spare room and started packing.
At the front door, Tessa grabbed my hand.
“I’ll talk to him. I’ll get him to let you come back tonight.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
I stepped outside, luggage in hand, and called my real estate agent before I’d even reached the sidewalk.
“I want to list the apartment. The sooner, the better.”
Callum had been faking amnesia so long, he must have forgotten one thing.
My parents bought that apartment. In cash. The deed was in my name.
