He Pretended to Have Amnesia and Chose My Best Friend, I Left Chapter 06
I was about to block Tessa too.
Then her messages came through.
[Callum made me wear the ring. The post was his idea.]
[I promise, the second he gets his memory back, I’m gone.]
[You’ll never hear from me again.]
[Just… please don’t take it out on the baby. The baby didn’t do anything.]
I stared at the messages.
What was done was done.
I didn’t know what she expected me to do with any of this.
That ring didn’t put itself on her finger.
And the baby didn’t get there on its own.
[Whatever you two do is your business now.]
[We’re done, Tessa.]
[I’m deleting your number.]
[That way Callum can stop threatening me over things I never did.]
I didn’t wait for a reply.
I deleted her contact and put my phone down.
—
Something in my chest loosened for the first time in months.
I turned back to my desk and finished handing off my projects.
That evening, I was eating dinner when my mom called. She was frantic.
“What happened with you and Callum?”
“I just saw a proposal video he posted. That’s the girl you brought home to meet us!”
“You told us it was just an act.”
That’s when it hit me, the thing I’d forgotten the night before.
I told her everything.
“Tessa’s pregnant. It’s Callum’s.”
“It’s over between us.”
I paused.
“And, Mom, Callum got his memory back months ago.”
She went quiet. Then I heard her sharp intake of breath as it all clicked.
“I never would have guessed. She seemed so sweet, so harmless.”
“And she went and did this to you.”
“Maybe it’s better this way. At least now you know exactly who they are.”
—
“I’m absolutely disgusted. I’m deleting their numbers right now.”
I let her vent, then kept going.
“I’m flying to Italy tomorrow for work.”
“And I’ve already got a real estate agent working on selling the apartment.”
My mom went quiet for a moment.
“That place was supposed to be your home after the wedding. But it’s yours. Do what you want with it.”
“It’s a breakup, sweetheart, not the end of the world. Do you really have to go that far?”
I almost laughed.
“He’s not that important, Mom.”
“The work’s better overseas, and the pay’s higher. That’s all.”
She didn’t argue. She just told me it was my call.
I packed what little I had and called the real estate agent again.
“I’m leaving the country tomorrow. I need this handled fast.”
The commission I offered was more than generous.
He didn’t need convincing.
“Maren, you’ve got nothing to worry about. Great location, brand-new finishes.”
—
“Someone already asked about it today. I’ll show it to them tomorrow.”
“One more thing.”
“There are people living there, but there’s no lease. There never was.”
“They’ve never paid a cent in rent. They’re not tenants.”
“When the buyers are ready to move in, tell them to toss their stuff on the curb.”
The next morning, I grabbed my bags and headed to the airport.
By then, Callum’s world was already falling apart.
