My parents were eventually helped back to their 

hotel by the staff. 

But Damon stayed standing in the rain. 

When I walked up to him, his eyes were already 

bloodshot. 

“Celine, I’m not here to force you back.” 

“The video is gone. The online attacks have been cleared up. I’ll compensate you for the project you lost and all your medical expenses.” 

“Our child-” 

His voice broke completely. 

Tears streamed down his face. 

“I’m sorry.” 

“When you grabbed me that day, I heard you say 

your stomach hurt.” 

“If I’d just looked back, just once–he might have 

lived.” 

He held the ring out in his palm. He didn’t try to put 

it on my finger. 

“I know ‘sorry‘ doesn’t bring anything back.” 

“But I still have to ask–can I stay here?” 

“Even if we just start over as acquaintances.” 

I looked at this man I’d loved for seven years. 

Strangely, there was no pain in my heart. 

I used to think Damon had been blinded by Vesper. 

That one day, when the truth came out, he’d go 

back to being that boy who would abandon his 

pack duties to put me first. 

I understood now. 

The Damon who had protected me was real. 

And the Damon who had hurt me for Vesper, over 

and over–he was real too. 

You can’t love only the best parts of someone, and 

then make excuses for all their cruelty. 

“Clarifying the truth and paying compensation- 

that’s the responsibility you should have taken.” 

“It’s not currency you can use to buy me back.” 

Damon’s hand trembled violently. 

I continued. 

“You asked if we could start over.” 

“But every time I look at you, I remember the seat taken up by a dress at the airport. The video that wasn’t deleted. And the child who never got to be born.” 

“I don’t have the strength to trust you one more 

time.” 

Damon lowered his head. Tears dripped onto the 

ring. 

After a long time, he said hoarsely: 

“Okay.” 

“This time, I won’t force you.” 

He had finally learned to respect my decision. 

But that would be the last time we ever saw each 

other.
