My Amnesiac Husband Asked for Divorce, I Laughed and Walked Away Chapter 03
To avoid the awkwardness of running into each other at the office during the divorce, I went in to resign.
Standing outside the Caldwell Corp building, I felt like I was saying goodbye to another life.
Six years ago, I’d thought my community college diploma wouldn’t even get me past the front door. Somehow, they’d hired me. Six years—from coffee-fetching assistant to team leader to supervisor to deputy director.
My best years, both career and love, had bloomed here. And now, it was ending here too.
Ever since the trending photos of Finn at the airport with Serena, the office had been buzzing. They called me the discarded wife, pushed aside by the first love. My resignation today only confirmed it.
I’d barely stepped into the office area when a voice dripped with sarcasm from behind—Wendy Park, the one who’d lost the deputy director spot to me.
“Well, well. Deputy Director Vance. Kicked out, are we? Need me to recommend you for a job? I might be able to pull some strings for a cleaning position—since you’ve been with President Caldwell so long.”
A few colleagues snickered.
I turned, pulled out my phone, and flashed my graduate enrollment proof. “Correction—I got into Columbia’s part-time Public Administration program last year. I’m applying for a PhD next year. Don’t worry about my job hunt. You’d better clean up that annual meeting disaster from last month before you get yourself fired.”
Wendy’s face went purple.
I couldn’t be bothered. I finished my paperwork and walked out.
At home, I collapsed on the couch, weighing whether to look for a new job or open my own store.
Then the door was kicked open with a bang.
Finn stormed in, radiating ice, and grabbed me. “Tessa—how could you be so cruel? You had someone run over Serena!”
I stared at him. “What are you talking about? I was at the office all day resigning!”
“Who else would have a grudge against her?”
He didn’t believe me. His grip on my wrist tightened. “You’d better pray she’s okay. Because if anything happens to her, I’ll make sure you rot in jail.”
He dragged me out, shoved me into his passenger seat, and forced me to go apologize to Serena.
Incredible.
We sped to the hospital. At the VIP ward, he pushed the door open—
And there was Fletcher, crouched in the corner, his hair a mess. When he saw us, he yelped and jumped up, bowing deeply to me, then to Finn.
His voice cracked. “Finn—I’m sorry! I didn’t know Serena was in the car! I just wanted to cause a little fender-bender, trigger your memory—”
I froze. Finn went still too.
“What did you say?” His voice went hoarse.
Fletcher was frantic. “Finn, you can’t divorce Tessa! You nearly disowned the family to marry her—you almost lost your inheritance! Your wedding was huge—you can still find the videos online. If you divorce her and then get your memory back, you’ll want to smash your head against the wall!”
I knew why Fletcher was so protective. A few years ago, he’d been in a bad car accident and needed rare Rh-negative blood. I’d donated 800cc to save his life.
That was also how I found out I’d been hired in the first place—because of my blood type.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Serena clench her fists on the hospital bed. Her head was wrapped in bandages—looked nasty.
Finn’s throat moved. After a long pause, he managed, “…I’m sorry. I blamed you without checking.”
I gave a dry laugh. “Is Miss Shaw okay?”
Finn looked at Serena. He said nothing.
On the way back, Fletcher hesitated, then said, “Tessa, I’ve been keeping something for years. My brother broke up with Serena because she cheated on him. He flew to surprise her on her birthday and walked in on her with some foreign guy in her apartment. He bought a ticket back that same day. He never spoke of her again. Please don’t divorce my brother over her.”
I was stunned. After a long moment, I sighed and patted his shoulder. “Fletch, thank you for telling me. But your brother and I—we’re not divorcing because of Serena.”
“Then why?” His eyes went wide.
My face burned. I couldn’t exactly tell him it was because his brother couldn’t perform in bed.
