My Best Friend Stole My Cheating Boyfriend, I Called It Double Blessing Chapter 03

It was almost noon when Nathan and Chloe walked back in, one after the other. Chloe had a new designer handbag on her shoulder. I’d seen the same bag in Nathan’s online order history—over three thousand dollars.

His birthday transfer to me? A few bucks.

A month ago, when that bag first dropped, I’d mentioned it to him. He asked, “Do all girls like that kind of thing?”

“Totally. Chloe and I both love that brand.”

I’d been so full of hope, convinced he was going to surprise me. Instead, the bag was on Chloe’s arm.

As they passed my desk, Nathan paused. “Eve, two coffees. My office.”

With an audience, he always played the boss. I carried the coffees in. Chloe sat there with her top slipped off one shoulder, and Nathan hovered over her, ears bright red, dabbing ointment onto her skin like he was handling something fragile.

The second she saw me, Chloe yanked her top up. “Eve, don’t get the wrong idea. A scooter clipped me getting out of the car. Nathan’s just helping.”

I set the coffees down, my voice flat. “It’s fine. Take your shirt off. Let him finish.”

Before Chloe could react, Nathan exploded. “Eve, what is wrong with you? Apologize to her.”

A bitter smirk tugged at my lips. “For what? What did I say that was wrong?”

Seeing me talk back made his temper spike. “Chloe got hurt because of you, and you have the nerve to stand there with an attitude?”

I blinked. “What?”

“If she hadn’t been so upset over your little resignation stunt, she wouldn’t have been distracted and gotten hit!”

“Enough with the drama. I swear, if I’d known you’d pull stuff like this, I never would’ve hired you.”

Even though I knew he played favorites, his words hit me like a bucket of ice water. The cold seeped straight to my bones.

I couldn’t hold it in anymore. “Nathan, we’re done. Let’s break up.”

The room went dead silent. After a long pause, Chloe grabbed my hand.

“Eve, what is going on with you lately?”

“Nathan’s under so much stress. Stop making this harder.”

“There’s really nothing going on between us. Please don’t let me come between you two. Just say you’re sorry and we can all move past this—”

I wrenched my hand free and stared straight into her eyes. “So in your eyes, it’s always my fault? Chloe, I got you this job so you’d have my back—not so you could team up with Nathan against me.”

Chloe’s face went pale.

“Enough!” Nathan shoved Chloe behind him and looked at me like I was something rotten.

“Chloe is actually talented. Unlike someone who answers phones, pours coffee, and then cries about it like a child.”

He hit his assistant’s number on speaker. “Approve Ella’s resignation immediately. I want her out within two days.”

Chloe’s voice pitched with panic. “Nathan, don’t be rash!”

He held up a hand, staring down his nose at me. “You want a breakup? Done. Eve, without me, with that joke of a degree, where exactly are you going to go?”

So that’s what I was to him. A leech who couldn’t survive on her own.

I touched the corner of my eye. Dry. Thank God, no tears left for him. I straightened my spine and kept my voice steady.

“Then please speed up the paperwork, Mr. Carter.”

I didn’t want to look at either of them for another second. I turned and walked out. Chloe tried to chase after me, but Nathan held her back.

“I can’t let you two break up because of me.”

“She pulls this all the time. Don’t bother. She always comes crawling back to apologize.”

Right. Every past fight ended with me groveling. The few times he reached out first, it was only because Chloe told him to.

At least this time, I wouldn’t.
