My BFF Betrayed Me with My Boyfriend! Now Neither of Them Will Leave Me Alone! Chapter 03

Karen was distracted all afternoon, constantly glancing toward the doctors’ station.

I couldn’t tell who she was looking at.

During rounds, I looked at a patient’s IV bag and frowned.

“Karen.”

She snapped back to attention.

“Dr… Ellis.”

I closed the door to the patient’s room behind me, my voice turning cold.

“What happened with the dosage for the patient in Room 311? Are you trying to get someone killed?”

Karen looked alarmed.

After checking the dosage, all the color drained from her face.

“Dr. Ellis, I… I’m sorry…”

I took a deep breath.

“Enough. I’m not the one you should be apologizing to. You should apologize to the patient.”

Then I turned to the nurse manager.

“Please don’t schedule her on my shifts again. Thank you.”

Karen’s eyes immediately filled with tears, and she bit her lip.

Evan hurried over after hearing the commotion.

Once he checked the dosage, he said, “It was just a small mistake. It wasn’t that serious.”

I slowly raised my eyes to that familiar face.

I felt like a complete fool.

“Evan Buckley.”

“Who was it that said there was no room for mistakes when caring for patients because one careless error could cost someone their life?”

Evan’s expression changed.

For a moment, he had nothing to say.

Evan was the hospital director’s son, and people had praised him his entire life.

Back in school, he had secretly competed with me, but I had never backed down.

Then one day, he smiled and explained himself.

“My family holds me to extremely high standards. Don’t assume I’ve gotten everything because of them. Athena, you and I have the same dreams and ambitions. I worked my way here too, one step at a time. Could you stop hating me so much?”

I truly believed we were the same.

The hallway lights reflected off the chart in my hands, so bright that I could barely keep my eyes open.

I looked at him in disappointment and slowly shook my head.

Evan tried to say something else, but Karen covered her mouth and ran away in tears.

He frowned, gave me a long look, then immediately chased after her.

The hospital rooftop overlooked the city lights.

I stood there quietly, letting the evening breeze wash over me.

The door suddenly opened, and Karen walked out with red-rimmed eyes.

“Evan said… you come up here whenever you’re upset…”

I froze.

Whenever I had a difficult patient or a complicated case, I used to come here to clear my head.

This place had once been a secret that belonged only to Evan and me.

In front of everyone else, we competed over everything.

In the deserted corners of the rooftop, we kissed passionately.

Karen stepped closer.

“Thea, I’m sorry. I know saying that changes nothing. But I still… couldn’t stop myself.”

Her voice broke.

“You’re good at everything. You have your career, your talent, and everyone’s respect. But I’m different. I’m just an ordinary person. I only wanted someone to be there for me…”

I let out a cold laugh.

“There are so many people in this world. Did it have to be Evan?”

Her expression shifted.

After a long silence, she finally forced herself to speak.

“Athena, you can hate me. I don’t regret it. You helped me a lot, but I don’t owe you anything. We’re even now.”

I almost laughed until I cried.

After she left, Evan stood quietly a step away from me.

He lit a cigarette.

“Athena, we were together for years. You were always the calm one. You never said you needed me. You never said you missed me. You never admitted you were scared. You never needed my connections or resources. Whenever I gave you a gift, you always gave me something of equal value in return.”

“I started wondering whether you ever cared about me that much.”

When he mentioned Karen, his expression softened.

“She’s different. I’m her entire world.”

I stayed silent for a long time.

In the end, I gave him a bitter smile and said nothing.

Karen was the kind of person who treated love as her whole life.

That was why she had moved to Montana for Derek.

I was different.

Love was only one part of my life, maybe 10% of it.

But within that 10%, Evan had been 100%.

Too bad he had never understood.

I turned and walked away.

The evening wind caught the rooftop door and pushed it shut behind me.

I would never come back here again.
