My Billionaire Husband Arrested Me for Taking His Money Chapter 02
When they brought me into the station, the male officer assigned to question me stopped short.
“She’s pregnant?”
The female officer nodded.
“What did she do that couldn’t wait until after she gave birth?”
“She stole money.”
“How much?”
“Three thousand dollars.”
“That’s enough to pursue charges. Who reported it?”
“Her husband.”
The male officer’s eyes widened as he looked at me. I lowered my head, my eyes burning.
“Come inside.”
They cuffed me to a chair in the interview room, but instead of questioning me, the officer took out his phone.
“What’s your husband’s number? I’ll see if I can convince him to drop the complaint.”
I looked up in surprise. The female officer turned to me too.
“He’s right. Money between spouses usually isn’t that simple. There may still be room to work this out.”
My hands curled into fists.
“There isn’t. He made me sign a postnuptial agreement.”
The female officer’s eyes widened. Embarrassed, I pressed my lips together before continuing.
“After his father died, Ryan stopped giving me his paychecks. He had an agreement drawn up stating that everything he earned belonged to him alone.”
The male officer didn’t seem to know how to respond.
By then, the call had connected, and Ryan’s voice came through the speaker.
“Mr. Mercer, given your wife’s condition, we can’t keep her here. Could you come pick her up and reconsider the complaint after the baby is born?”
“No.”
Ryan’s voice was cold and final.
“Handle it however the law requires. Don’t expect me to let this go just because she’s my wife. I’m not dropping the complaint, and I won’t sign any statement asking for leniency.”
“But she’s… Hello?”
The line went dead.
The male officer lowered the phone, visibly stunned.
“It’s all right. We’ll try talking to him again.”
“There’s no need.”
I shook my head and managed a weak smile.
“Just do this by the book.”
“But you’re…”
“I’ll be fine. My due date is still a month away.”
I barely managed to get the words out. The two officers exchanged a look and sighed.
“All right, then. Ma’am, are you feeling…”
The female officer abruptly rose from her seat.
I doubled over, clutching my stomach, then collapsed from the chair onto the floor.
When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a hospital bed.
Ryan had come with his mother, Diane Mercer. The moment Diane saw me, she wiped tears from her cheeks.
“Lena, don’t be afraid. I made that idiot son of mine drop the complaint. It’s over now.”
Surprised, I turned to Ryan. He stood off to the side without saying a word, his expression distant.
Diane had flown in at the last minute because of what happened to me, but she had to leave again immediately.
When we reached the airport entrance, I remained in the car and clearly heard her scolding Ryan outside.
“She did everything she could when your father got sick. Do you really think you two had money to spare back then?”
“Lena has always done right by this family. When my asthma got bad, she borrowed money to buy my medication!”
I leaned closer to the half-open window, only to hear Ryan laugh coldly.
“Mom, I handed her every paycheck back then. Any money she spent on your medication came from me.”
My fingers tightened around the edge of the window.
Diane had no answer. After a moment, she silently turned and walked into the terminal.
The driver’s door opened, and Ryan got in.
“We can go home now.”
I rested a hand on my stomach.
“Thank you.”
“You’re welcome.”
By the time we arrived home, the housekeeper had already prepared dinner. Ryan hung his coat on the rack.
“Let’s eat.”
“Okay.”
“The doctor said you’re malnourished, so you need protein with every meal. Mom had me order groceries for you. Make sure you eat properly until the baby comes.”
I froze for a moment.
“Th-thank you.”
The food on the table was light and nutritious, exactly what a pregnant woman needed.
I was about to sit down when Ryan grabbed my arm.
“So, how are you planning to pay for it?”
