My Boyfriend’s Childhood Sweetheart Cursed Me?It All Came Back Chapter 01
Celine Brooke, my boyfriend Ethan Sterling’s childhood friend, was a real jinx. Every terrible things he said out loud came true.
Right before the SAT, she said to Ethan’s first crush, “I heard you two are aiming for the same college. Hope you don’t mess it up.”
She had ranked first in her class for three straight years. The none mistake on her college application cost her the school she had wanted most.
In college, there was this senior who pursued Ethan.
Celine cooed at her: “Your skin is flawless. I can’t even imagine what you’d look like with acne.”
Next day, her face was covered in breakouts. Nothing worked. She disappeared from campus entirely.
Girls entered Ethan’s life and disappeared just as quickly. Twenty-something years old, and he’d never had a single real relationship.
Then Celine went to study abroad in Europe. That’s when I made my move.
Two years later, the first thing she did upon returning was find us. Her first words to me:
“Heard you two are getting engaged. Congratulations. Hope nothing delays it.”
The moment she said it, Ethan’s phone rang. His parents—engagement postponed.
Celine looked at me, smug.
I took a calm sip of my iced Americano. A cold alert rang in my head.
[External threat detected against host. Threat level: 20%. At 100%, the Backlash System will activate.]
I put my cup down and smiled at her.
“Ms. Brooke. Careful what you say.”
…
My composure caught her off guard.
She shot me a weird look, then scoffed—she figured I was bluffing.
Then she looped her arm around Ethan’s.
“Ethan, what a shame. Maybe fate just didn’t want your engagement to happen that day.”
Ethan looked at me with guilt in his eyes.
“Stella, sorry. My dad said the venue caught fire. Nothing else was available on that date—we had to push it a month.”
I smiled. “It’s fine. I can wait. We’ll get engaged eventually anyway.”
Ethan squeezed my hand, relieved. “Stella, thank you for understanding. I’m so lucky to have you.”
I smiled and said nothing.
Celine was grinding her teeth. Her eyes gleamed with something dark.
Before we parted, she leaned in and whispered in my ear:
“Watch your step. You look pale. Blood’s coming.”
My heart sank a little.
She really was ruthless.
I gave her a cold look. She smiled back, teasing.
Then she turned around, expression normal again, chatting cheerfully with Ethan.
Ethan had told me about her before. Their families went way back. Her parents died in a car crash when she was in middle school. His parents took her in out of pity and told Ethan to look after her.
Out of duty, he gave her whatever she asked for.
Celine had his attention all to herself. She liked telling peoples he was the only girl who truly understood him.
Then Ethan hit puberty, and he started noticing something. Every girl he got close to? Something bad happened to her.
Eventually, no woman dared come near him. He used to joke he’d die alone.
I asked around. Pieced together the details. And I realized—their misfortune might have something to do with Celine.
I told Ethan. He laughed it off. Said I was overthinking.
Not his fault. He’d lived twenty-something years in a normal world.
Me? I’ve been a veteran at the World-Hopping Bureau. I’ve seen too many strange powers to count.
But I detected no system on Celine. Where her ability came from—that was still a question.
On our way back, I sat in the passenger seat. Ethan was driving.
Celine had dropped a curse on me—bloody disaster on the road ahead.
But we were both in the car. She wouldn’t want Ethan hurt. So if I just stayed inside until we got home, I’d be fine, right?
That thought had barely crossed my mind when Ethan shouted:
“Stella, watch out!”
A speeding car was heading straight for my side.
