My Pregnancy Record Proved I Cheated? Then Why Did My Sister Panic? Chapter 05

The patient name was Chloe Miller.

Mom’s crying stopped in the hallway.

Dana held the pages up one by one. Chloe Miller

was listed on every single one.

The hospital’s certification stamp sat in the

lowerright corner, crisp and unmistakable, like the

final word on the page.

Outside, the hallway was so quiet that even the

faint hum of the ventilation system at the far end

was audible.

The color drained from Chloe’s face.

She stumbled back and hit the plastic chair behind

her with a dull thud.

Instinctively, she looked at Nathan.

Nathan didn’t look at her.

His eyes were fixed on the procedure paperwork in

Dana’s handspecifically, the signature line for the

adult who had accompanied the patient.

His expression wasn’t shock. It was blank.

It was the kind of blank look someone gets in the

split second after a blow, before the pain

registers.

I took the procedure paperwork from Dana and

walked over to Chloe, holding the patientname. field directly in front of her.

This has your name on it. How do you explain

that?”

Her lips trembled.

It’s fake! You had someone fake it!”

I smiled.

This came straight from the hospital’s Medical

Records Department. They printed the original

record right in front of us.”

It has the hospital’s certification stamp, the staff

user ID, and the electronic record ID.”

I moved the paperwork a little closer.

Want me to have someone from health IT pull the

record directly from the system in front of you?”

She went silent.

Her mouth stayed open, but no sound came out.

Tears spilled from her eyes and ran down her chin, dripping onto the front of her hospital gown.

Her shoulders shook. Her hands trembled. All the

strength went out of her as she slid down against

the chair.

Vivian”

Don’t say my name like you’re still my sister.”

I pulled the procedure paperwork back.

Where was all that sisterly concern when you

slammed that pregnancy record down beside the champagne tower?”

Where was it when you told everyone in that room.

that I’d stolen money, hit you, and cheated on

Nathan?”

Where was it when you wrote that long message to the family saying I’d taken everything from you

since we were kids?”

Chloe collapsed into the chair and covered her

face with both hands, her sobs muffled between

her fingers.

Mom released Chloe’s arm.

She stepped away.

Her hand lifted as if she wanted to reach for me,

then fell again.

Mom, do you believe me now?”

She didn’t answer.

Her silence was answer enough.

The sharp click of hurried heels came from down

the hallway.

Mrs. Holloway rushed around the corner, shoved aside the nurse blocking the doorway, and snatched the registration form from my hand.

She stared at the patientname field for so long that everyone in the hallway seemed to stop breathing.

Then she looked up at me.

Whose baby was it?”

You should ask the person who signed the

paperwork.”

She looked down at the form again, then turned

toward Nathan.

He stood behind her, his face pale.

I asked you a question!she shrieked. Was it yours?”

Nathan took one step back.

That was his answer.

Mrs. Holloway lunged at him and slapped him. across the face.

The crack echoed down the empty hallway.

You bastard! You slept with that little slut!”

And you stood there acting innocent while you had me doing your dirty work!”

Nathan held his cheek and couldn’t get a single

word out.

Mrs. Holloway spun toward Chloe, who was

crumpled beside the chair, and pointed at her.

And you! You slept with Nathan, got pregnant with his baby, then used your own pregnancy record to

accuse Vivian of cheating!”

Mom went white.

Chloe scrambled up, dropped to her knees in front

of Mrs. Holloway, and clutched at her pant leg.

Her voice was shredded from crying, her words.

barely intelligible through her sobs.

Mrs. HollowayI didn’t mean to. He was the one

who came to me first.”

He said Vivian was too controlling. He said he

never even felt like talking when he got home. He

said-”

She pointed at Nathan.

Nathan’s head snapped up, a vein standing out on

his forehead.

You’re lying! You were drunk that night. You called

me and asked me to come get you!”

Youyou told me Vivian wasn’t home. You asked

me to come upstairs for a while. You said-”

He cut himself off.

But everyone had heard enough.

Two nurses at the station stopped what they were

doing, and a hospital aide pushing a cart froze in

place.

Mom looked down at Chloe as if she were looking

at a stranger.

I picked up my phone and stopped the recording.

Dana, let’s go.”

I turned and headed down the hallway.

Behind me came Chloe’s ragged sobs and Mrs.

Holloway’s furious curses.

The elevator doors opened, and I stepped inside.

As they slowly closed, I heard Nathan calling my

name.

Then the elevator doors closed, cutting off every

sound from the hallway.

Dana glanced at me.

We’ve preserved all the evidence. Tomorrow we can go to the police and file a formal report.”

Okay.
