My Pregnancy Record Proved I Cheated? Then Why Did My Sister Panic? Chapter 07

I heard from the Holloways sooner than I

expected.

The doorbell rang early the next morning.

Mrs. Holloway stood outside.

Her hair was immaculate, but not even her

foundation could hide the dark circles beneath her

eyes.

Can I come in?”

I stepped aside.

She sat down on the couch with her back perfectly

straight.

What happened was wrong. Our family owes you

an apology.”

We’ll handle the situation with Chloe, and I’ve

already had it out with Nathan.”

We can still talk about you and Nathan getting

married.”

No.”

She froze.

This isn’t about whether you’re willing to take me back. I’m the one who doesn’t want to marry him.”

She rose, but her tone had lost some of its edge.

Think carefully.”

Nathan made a mistake, but he’s young. What man hasn’t made a mistake?”

He’ll change.”

You call that a mistake?”

I walked to the door and opened it.

Mrs. Holloway, with all due respect, if I’d known. this was what your family considered acceptable, I never would have gotten involved with any of you

in the first place.”

She had no answer.

Mrs. Holloway, you were the one who told me a woman from a family like mine wasn’t good

enough to marry into yours.”

Turns out I agree with you. I’m not good enough

for the Holloways. You should go.”

Her lips pressed into a thin line.

She walked past me, the sharp click of her heels.

stopping after two steps.

Vivian.”

I didn’t answer.

I simply gestured toward the elevator.

She stood there for two seconds before leaving.

The elevator doors opened, then closed.

Nathan came that evening.

Through the peephole, I watched him stand outside with one hand halfraised toward the

doorbell. He lowered it, then lifted it again.

The mark from his mother’s slap had darkened overnight into a deep bruise across the left side of

his face.

I opened the door.

He didn’t come in. He stayed at the threshold with

his head lowered.

I saw the investigation findings. They pulled the procedure paperwork too.”

I said nothing.

Vivian, I never meant for any of this to happen.”

That night, Chloe was drunk. She kept calling me

and crying.”

She said she was stranded outside a bar and had no way to get home. I only went to pick her up.”

I gave him a flat look.

Sure. You picked her up and somehow ended up

in bed with her.”

His mouth opened, then closed.

After that night, she said we should pretend nothing ever happened.”

Then she came to me again. She said she’d always envied you. She said she didn’t want anything official. I couldn’t resist.”

He pulled one hand from his pocket, then shoved

it back in.

I went with her for the abortion. I told her once it

was over, we were done. She agreed.”

When she pulled out that pregnancy record at the wedding, I was completely blindsided.”

I know I was a coward. I couldn’t even look up.

But I swear I never meant to hurt you.”

I looked at him.

There it was againthat face.

He had worn the same expression while people.

were spreading lies about me.

His brows were slightly drawn. His lips were

pressed together. His eyes held that helpless.

innocence that seemed to say he hated what was

happening too, but there was nothing he could do.

Back then, I had thought he was being pressured,

caught in the middle with no real choice.

Eventually, I understood.

Nathan was never trapped.

He simply made sure he was always standing in

the safest possible place.

When Chloe cried, he softened not because he felt

sorry for her, but because he didn’t want anyone to

think he was heartless.

He signed the paperwork for her abortion not

because he was taking responsibility, but because.

a baby would have made his life more

complicated.

At the wedding, he stayed silent not because he

was afraid to defy his mother, but because silence

let everyone else make the decision for him.

While the internet tore me apart, he kept his head

down and somehow managed to look like another

victim.

From beginning to end, Nathan had never set out

to hurt me.

He had simply never once thought to protect me.

Anger surged through me.

It’s not that you never meant to hurt me. You just

never thought about anyone but yourself.”

He lifted his head, his lips trembling.

You say you went to pick her up.”

You say you couldn’t resist. It wasn’t that you

couldn’t. You didn’t want to.”

She threw herself at you, and you figured there

was no reason to say no.”

Then afterward, all you had to say was, She came onto me, and suddenly your hands were clean.

How many times have you pulled that routine on me?”

He took half a step back.

You call yourself a coward.”

Nathan, you’re not a coward.”

Cowards are afraid to act. You made a calculated

choice.”

You were figuring out how to handle everything so you’d come out best.”

I slapped him across the face.

Chloe got pregnant. You went with her for an

abortion, signed the paperwork, and thought that

closed the book.”

Then she pulled out the pregnancy record at our

wedding and you stayed silent, because you knew

I was the one getting torn apart, not you.”

I couldn’t keep my voice down anymore.

People like you disgust me because you’re not

obviously cruel.”

You cry. You apologize. You say you were wrong.

But every choice you make is the one that protects

you most.”

You sell yourself as the poor guy caught in the

middle, when really, you’re the coldest person in

the room.”

You let Chloe believe you loved her. You let me

believe you would protect me. You let your mother

believe some woman had taken advantage of

you.”

You fooled everyoneincluding yourself.”

His mouth hung open.

His lips trembled, his eyes reddened, and tears. began to fall.

But he didn’t say a word.

Every excuse he had ever used on me had been

stripped away.

The one favor you ever did me was staying silent

at the wedding.”

If you’d defended me, I might still be stuck in this

mess with you. So thanks.”

He stepped forward and reached for my arm.

I backed away.

Don’t touch me. Get the hell out.”

I slammed the door so hard the frame shook.

Through the peephole, I saw him standing outside

with his hand still suspended in midair.

I turned and leaned back against the door,

breathing hard. My fingertips tingled, and my head

was still buzzing.

Men like Nathan were always safe from blame

because no one ever called them scumbags.

He was just quiet.

He was just passive.

He just couldn’t resist.

He was just caught in the middle.

He wrapped himself in the image of a good man,

but there was nothing inside. Anyone who got

close to him ended up drained dry and couldn’t even point to where he had hurt them.

I closed my eyes and slowly let out a long breath.

This time, he was the one left outside my door

crying.
