My Sister’s ‘Secret Boyfriend’ Was My Fiance Chapter 02
A long time passed—long enough that I thought Graham was not going to respond.
Instead, he called me.
I answered, but neither of us spoke until Graham finally broke the silence.
“Nora, let me explain when I get back.”
That was as good as an admission.
My gaze fell on the calendar on the table. The twenty-sixth had been circled in red, with an exclamation point beside it.
That was the day Graham was coming back.
That was only two days away.
He sighed. “Don’t confront her, okay?”
The protectiveness in his voice was unmistakable.
Tears burned behind my eyes, and my voice came out raw. “Why?”
Graham was silent for a moment before saying, “Nora, just wait until I get back.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, Lila’s voice drifted through the phone.
She spoke softly, but I could still hear every word.
“Graham, is that Nora?”
Graham’s voice softened.
“No.”
“Just a friend.”
I suddenly did not want to hear another word.
After five years together, Graham had reduced me to a friend.
After I hung up, a message from him appeared on my screen.
Graham: [Lila would rather I didn’t bring you up. It makes her feel guilty.]
I stared at the message, and all at once, the whole thing felt pointless.
Guilty? She actually felt guilty?
Then why was she sneaking around with Graham behind my back?
I did not reply.
Later that night, another Instagram post from Lila appeared in my feed.
It was a single photo of their hands intertwined, with no caption.
Graham was wearing a different ring now, and Lila had a new one on her finger.
Their rings matched.
One of our mutual friends commented, [When did you two get married?!]
Lila replied almost immediately, [We’re not married. It was his birthday yesterday, and he proposed to me~]
I stared at the post for a long time.
If Graham had already proposed to her, then so much for me being his fiancée.
I did not confront Graham or question Lila.
I simply liked the post.
Five minutes later, Graham sent me two messages.
Graham: [She just wanted to know what it felt like to be proposed to. It wasn’t real.]
Graham: [Don’t take it to heart.]
I stared at the two messages and sent a single reply.
Me: [Okay.]
That was the end of the conversation.
I set my phone aside and dragged myself to the kitchen for a glass of water.
When I closed the refrigerator door, I spotted the custom fridge magnet Graham had ordered: [Don’t forget your heating pad!]
My cramps were so severe every month that they left me drenched in a cold sweat. Graham was always reminding me to use a heating pad, which was why he had had the magnet made.
I looked at it for a moment, then pulled it off and threw it in the trash without hesitation.
