My Sister’s ‘Secret Boyfriend’ Was My Fiance Chapter 04

Graham froze, and the color drained from his face.

“You want to break up?”

I did not answer his question. “Then you and Lila won’t have to sneak around anymore. You can switch back to the ring that matches hers.”

“Nora, don’t be ridiculous,” Graham said in a low voice. “Lila never wanted to take anything from you. You don’t have to do this. I told you, once this is over, everything will be fine.”

I finally laughed.

There was not a wound anywhere on my body, yet the pain in my chest was almost unbearable.

“Fine how?” I looked at Graham. “You end things with her, and I’m supposed to pretend none of this ever happened, stay with you, and then marry you?”

“Graham, I can’t accept that.”

“And I can’t pretend nothing happened.”

I could not accept that my boyfriend had cheated on me with my own sister. I could not understand either one of them.

Frustration crept across Graham’s face.

“Then what do you want? Lila’s already miserable. Nora, can’t you try to understand her?”

I looked at Graham and almost laughed myself to tears.

How was I supposed to understand any of this?

How was I supposed to understand Lila flying out to see him month after month, the two of them going out to dinner and dating, or Graham proposing to her?

“I can’t understand it, Graham,” I said.

“My sister is having an affair with my boyfriend. How am I supposed to understand that?”

The more I said, the worse the pain in my chest became.

I closed my eyes, then opened them again. “This is over, Graham.”

The door suddenly swung open.

Lila stood outside with red-rimmed eyes. “Nora, this is my fault. Graham didn’t do anything wrong. I was the one who fell for him. I was the one who kept chasing him…”

Tears streamed down her face as she spoke.

“But I truly never meant to take Graham from you. I know this was wrong, but… but I couldn’t control myself.”

“I’ve regretted the mistake I made every single night. I wanted to tell you.”

Graham walked over and pulled her into his arms.

The sight was almost unbearable.

“Nora, I promise I’ll end things with Graham. I’ll never see him again,” she said in a trembling voice. “Please don’t break up with him…”

Graham cut her off. “Don’t be ridiculous. Look at the state you’re in.”

I looked at Lila.

Ever since we were children, I had always given way to her and treated her well. Whenever there was something good to eat or something fun to do, she was the first person I thought of.

We had never so much as had a real argument.

She was affectionate and always clung to me.

After she met Graham, she would even mock him with open disdain.

“Who do you think you are? I’m the one who waits on Nora hand and foot. I take much better care of her than you ever could.”

Graham would immediately fire back, “No one knows Nora better than I do—not even you!”

They used to compete over who could take better care of me, rushing to bring me drinks or massage my legs and shoulders.

And those were the two people who had gotten together behind my back.

“You two don’t need to break up.”

My voice was very soft. “I’m breaking up with him.”

“Nora, that’s enough!” Graham snapped impatiently. “Can’t you see how much she’s hurting?”

I said nothing.

As if realizing how harsh he had sounded, he softened his voice. “We’ll talk this through once you’ve calmed down.”

“Let’s leave it here for tonight. Get some rest.”

Without even looking at me, he left with his arm around Lila.

The moment the door closed, my tears finally fell.

The engagement ring on the table looked like a cruel joke.

I picked it up and threw it into the trash without hesitation.

I did not want the ring anymore.

I did not want Graham either.
