Silent Revenge of a Hidden Heiress Chapter 02

Silent Revenge of a Hidden Heiress Chapter 02

After we finished eating, my mom left to go back to work.

I was waiting for an Uber outside the restaurant, and I ran into Nathan and Sheryl out of nowhere.

Standing between them was Mr. Campbell—the writer I’d begged three times just to get him to agree to come to the fundraiser.

“Mr. Campbell, Sheryl’s been pulling all-nighters getting this fundraiser ready. We really hope you’ll be happy with what we put together.”

I listened to Nathan nonstop gush about Sheryl.

My heart went ice cold in an instant.

All my hard work—he just handed it over to her for free, just like that.

Sheryl spotted me first. Her smile didn’t even falter. She nudged Nathan’s arm. “Nathan, that’s Elaine.”

Nathan’s eyes shifted over to me. He blinked in surprise, then furrowed his brow.

He stepped closer, his face still stern, but his voice had a hint of concern.

“What are you doing here? Forgot your umbrella again, didn’t you? I told you a million times, you’ll catch a cold in the rain. Forgot you had an IV for three days at the health center last time?”

It was rare for him to actually care for me.

But all I could think about was Mr. Campbell. I couldn’t hold back the question.

“Mr. Campbell was my guest. Why didn’t you tell me you were meeting him here?”

Nathan’s brow furrowed even deeper instantly, irritation bleeding into his voice.

“I was gonna ask you! We were all walking together, turned around and you were gone, no note no nothing. We couldn’t find you, so we just came ahead to meet Mr. Campbell.”

I laughed out loud, but my nose burned so bad I could barely breathe.

“You two walked so fast ahead of me. How was I supposed to keep up?”

“And we have phones, for God’s sake. You could’ve texted me, called me…”

Nathan’s face hardened. He pressed his lips together tight and said nothing.

Sheryl bumped his shoulder. “C’mon, Nathan, don’t scare Elaine.”

Then she turned to me, looking hurt. “Elaine, do you… do you have some kind of problem with me? We only met with Mr. Campbell last minute because he had another commitment later, we just didn’t have time to tell you.

“Besides, Nathan and I are only working on the fundraiser together. There’s honestly nothing going on between us. You don’t have to be so hostile toward me.”

Nathan’s face got darker and darker. He cut her off mid-sentence.

“Enough! Sheryl, you don’t have to prove anything to her. She’s just been jealous and throwing tantrums this whole time while we’ve been planning this. She’s being so unreasonable!”

He looked at me, and all I saw in his eyes was disappointment.

But this wasn’t the guy I used to know.

Senior year of high school, my mom got transferred for work, so I switched to Nathan’s high school and I ended up sitting in front of him.

I was quiet and closed off, so I didn’t have any friends in class.

I just figured I’d power through the last year like that.

But Nathan was the one who started talking to me first, helped me fit into the class little by little.

He taught me to be confident, gave me courage.

In the end, we got into the same college, and I got to be the one standing by his side.

I used to think that the crush I had on him back then would last my whole life.

But I forgot—love was a long flight.

Without fuel, it couldn’t go far.
