The Anonymous Notes That Destroyed My Wedding Chapter 06

A week passed.

Slowly, Ethan began to realize something was

wrong.

In that entire week, he didn’t get a single text or phone call from me.

There was nothing on my Instagram either. It was as if I’d vanished from the face of the earth.

He couldn’t take it anymore.

He left work early and drove to my office building.

He parked at the curb and leaned against his car smoking, his eyes fixed on the lobby doors.

At fivethirty, employees began trickling out in small groups.

By six, the sky was getting dark.

By seven, most of the office lights were off.

He never saw me.

Ethan finally went inside and walked to the front

desk.

Hi. I’m looking for Sienna Reed.”

The young receptionist looked up at him, her

expression turning slightly awkward.

Ms. Reed? She resigned.”

For a second, Ethan’s mind went blank.

Resigned? When?”

The receptionist answered.

Last Tuesday. She turned in her resignation out of

nowhere and was gone by the end of the day.”

Even HR was surprised.”

Last Tuesday.

The day our wedding was supposed to happen.

A tightness closed around Ethan’s throat.

He asked, Did she say where she was going?”

The receptionist shook her head.

No.”

She left so fast she didn’t even clear out her desk.

We boxed up the rest for her.”

Ethan turned and walked out of the building. A

gust of cold night air hit him, and he shivered.

He pulled out his phone and called me.

The number you’re trying to reach is unavailable.”

Then he tried to send me a message.

Not Deliveredappeared beneath the message.

I’d blocked him.

Ethan stood on the crowded sidewalk, the glow

from his phone washing over his face.

He stared at the failed message for a long time.

Long enough for the screen to go dark before he

tapped it awake again.

He remembered the wedding morning, when I’d said it was off. He’d assumed I was throwing

another fit.

He remembered all eight years, all the times he’d left me behind and I’d eventually made my way

back to him.

But this time, I’d left and I hadn’t come back.

His phone suddenly rang.

He answered. Chloe’s tearful voice came through.

Ethanthe baby’s been crying nonstop. I can’t calm him down, and I don’t know what to do. Can

you come over?”

Ethan held the phone to his ear without moving.

Ethan?”

Chloe called his name.

Did you hear me?”

Sienna’s gone.”

When Ethan finally spoke, his voice was painfully

hoarse.

What?”

She quit her job. Her phone’s unreachable, and

she blocked me.”

She’s really gone.”

The other end of the line went quiet for several

seconds.

Then Chloe tried to calm him.

Ethan, don’t panic. Maybemaybe she just needs

some space. Give her a few days and she’ll”

She’s not coming back.”

Ethan cut her off.

I know her. She’s really gone this time.”

His voice dropped so low it sounded like he was talking to himself.

Chloe was silent for a long time before she finally

asked.

Thendo you want to come see the baby first?”

Ethan closed his eyes for a moment.

No.”

He said it quietly.

I’m going to find her.
