The Anonymous Notes That Destroyed My Wedding Chapter 08
Ethan reached Tahoe at dusk the next day.Â
He followed the street from his coworker’s photoÂ
until he reached the little artisan textile shop, thenÂ
stopped outside, breathing hard as he peered in.Â
No one was inside.Â
He went inside and approached the owner.Â
“Hi, did a woman come in here today?”Â
“Gray coat, long hair, about this tall…”Â
He held up a hand to show my height.Â
The owner thought for a moment, then nodded.Â
“Yes. She was here yesterday and bought someÂ
fabric. Said she wanted to make a bed for the catÂ
at her place.”Â
“Do you know where she’s staying?”Â
The owner shook her head.Â
“I’m not sure. But it looks like she’s staying a while.Â
She’s been in a few times.”Â
Ethan thanked her and stepped back outside.Â
He stood on the sidewalk with no idea where to goÂ
next.Â
So he wandered aimlessly through historicÂ
downtown Truckee.Â
At every inn and guesthouse he passed, heÂ
glanced up, hoping to catch sight of someoneÂ
familiar.Â
Near the south end of downtown, he stoppedÂ
dead.Â
I was crouched on a set of steps, feeding a strayÂ
cat.Â
Sunset warmed the side of my face. The windÂ
lifted my hair, brushing a few strands across myÂ
cheek.Â
Ethan stopped as if his feet had rooted to theÂ
ground.Â
He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.Â
Something made me look up.Â
I paused when I saw him.Â
Then I looked back down and kept feeding the catÂ
as if I hadn’t seen him.Â
Ethan closed the distance in a few strides andÂ
grabbed my wrist.Â
“Sienna.”Â
I jerked my wrist, but he held on.Â
“Let go.”Â
“No.”Â
His voice shook.Â
“Sienna, please. Listen to me. I know I was wrong.Â
I know that now.”Â
“I ended things with her. I’m never going to see herÂ
again. Please come home with me.”Â
“I’ll give you another wedding. A better one thanÂ
before…”Â
I looked up at him.Â
He’d lost weight. Dark circles bruised the skinÂ
under his eyes.Â
I didn’t feel sorry for him.Â
“Ethan, we don’t have anything left to say.”Â
I pulled my hand free and stepped back.Â
“You say it’s over with her. Fine. What are youÂ
going to do about your child?”Â
Ethan went still.Â
“…”Â
“You can’t answer, can you?”Â
“That’s your baby. You’re not going to abandonÂ
your own child.”Â
“And as long as you share a child, Chloe willÂ
always be part of your life.”Â
I looked at him and gave a small smile.Â
“Ethan, it’s been eight years. I waited for you. IÂ
forgave you more times than I should have.”Â
“But some things can’t be fixed just because youÂ
say you’re sorry.”Â
I turned and walked toward the inn.Â
“Go home. Don’t come looking for me again.”
