While Pregnant, My Alpha Husband Auctioned Me Off for One Dollar Chapter 09
“Good evening, everyone.”Â
Gavin stood at the center of the stage with aÂ
microphone in hand. The spotlight made him lookÂ
confident and unbearably pleased with himself.Â
“Tonight, in addition to thanking all of you for yourÂ
continued support of Cole Group, I have twoÂ
announcements to make.”Â
He paused and looked at Vera with open.Â
affection.Â
“First, I’m establishing a charitable foundation inÂ
Vera’s name and launching it with ten million.Â
dollars in initial funding. It will support women who lose a child during pregnancy or sufferÂ
pregnancy–related emergencies. Vera, you taughtÂ
me what true kindness looks like.”Â
Thunderous applause filled the ballroom.Â
Tears shimmered in Vera’s eyes as she pressed both hands to her chest and basked in the envyÂ
around her.Â
The guests who knew nothing about the truthÂ
praised Gavin for supporting an old friend and called him responsible.Â
Standing in the shadows below the stage, I nearly laughed at the shamelessness of it all.Â
He was using our marital assets and the moneyÂ
he had earned by auctioning his wife to establish a charity for his mistress.Â
Gavin truly knew how to squeeze value out of every dollar.Â
“The second announcement,” he continued, “concerns the Manhattan project…”Â
“I’m afraid Mr. Cole is no longer qualified toÂ
participate in the Manhattan waterfrontÂ
development project.”Â
I cut him off.Â
My heels struck the polished marble with crisp,Â
steady clicks as I walked toward the stage.Â
Every head in the ballroom turned toward me.Â
Gavin frowned and lowered his voice so only IÂ
could hear. “Erin, what the hell are you doing? GetÂ
the hell off this stage.”Â
I ignored him.Â
I went straight to the control console, ripped outÂ
the receiver connected to his microphone, and inserted the flash drive I had prepared.Â
“Gavin, have you forgotten where that first ten million dollars actually came from?”Â
I picked up another microphone and pressedÂ
Enter.Â
The enormous LED screen behind the stage lit up.Â
Instead of the foundation presentation,Â
crystal–clear footage from Nightfall’s VIP sectionÂ
filled the screen.Â
Gavin sat on a leather sofa wearing his silverÂ
mask.Â
The accompanying audio had been digitallyÂ
restored to remove the effects of the voiceÂ
changer and reveal his real voice.Â
[This woman is stubborn. Once you take her home, do whatever you want with her. I won’tÂ
interfere. Just keep her alive, and I’ll cover theÂ
expenses afterward. One dollar. Whoever takesÂ
her is responsible for keeping her under control.]Â
His cold, vicious words thundered through theÂ
ballroom one after another.Â
No one spoke.Â
Everyone in the ballroom stood frozen in shock.Â
The color drained from Gavin’s face. He lungedÂ
toward the console and tried to yank out the flashÂ
drive.Â
“Security! Get this insane woman off the stage!Â
That video is fake!”Â
His voice cracked into a hoarse shout.Â
“Fake, is it?”Â
Damian’s cold voice came from the audience.Â
He walked onto the stage with several men in suits and stepped directly between the securityÂ
guards and me.Â
“Mr. Cole, allow me to introduce them. This isÂ
Detective Harris from the NYPD Financial CrimesÂ
Unit. The man beside him is an inspector from theÂ
Pack Council.”Â
Detective Harris displayed his badge.Â
“Gavin Cole, we received a report. You’reÂ
suspected of attempting to sell and transfer a werewolf through an illegal auction,Â
misappropriating company funds, fraudulentlyÂ
transferring marital assets, and violating Pack.Â
member protection regulations. You’re comingÂ
with us.”Â
Panic shattered Gavin’s composure.Â
He stumbled backward. “No, this isn’t true! I neverÂ
auctioned anyone. It was a joke! Nightfall’sÂ
auctioneer set me up!”Â
He pointed at me, desperate to push all the blameÂ
onto me.Â
“It was her! She planned the whole thing to frameÂ
me!”Â
I watched him unravel.Â
Then I calmly opened my clutch, removed a blackÂ
metal badge engraved with the NightingaleÂ
emblem, and pinned it to my chest.Â
“You’re right.”Â
I stared into his widening eyes.Â
“I did set the trap.”Â
I took one step closer.Â
“Because I am Nightingale.”Â
Gasps exploded across the ballroom.Â
Vera screamed and collapsed onto the floor.Â
Gavin stared at the badge on my chest, terror twisting his face.Â
“You… You…”Â
His hand shook as he pointed at me, but he couldÂ
no longer force out a complete sentence.Â
“Did you really think I knew nothing?” I walkedÂ
toward him one measured step at a time. “YouÂ
wanted revenge for Vera, so you tried to hand me.Â
over to illegal buyers. But you never realized youÂ
had walked into a place I controlled for five years.”
