You Want My Grandma’s $8 BILLION Inheritance DREAM ON! SCUMBAG, Watch Your Empire COLLAPSE Overnight! Chapter 05

The next morning, Alex left for work.

Before he walked out the door, he leaned down and kissed me.

“Come home early tonight. I’ll make it up to you and celebrate our anniversary properly.”

I nodded.

“Okay.”

The moment the door closed, the smile disappeared from my face.

I picked up my phone and called Julian.

“Mr. Ward, I need you to look into something for me.”

“Of course. What is it?”

“I need to know where the original startup capital for Alexander Langford’s Langford Properties came from.”

Julian paused for two seconds.

“I’ll start look into it today.”

“And one more thing,” I added. “Help me schedule an appointment with Dr. Margaret Finch, the head of gynecology at New York General Hospital. I need access to my medical records from seven years ago.”

“Understood.”

After hanging up, I changed clothes and left the house.

I went to one place.

The VIP lounge of New York Private Bank.

For the past seven years, I had invested under the alias “Evie Sequence.”

Calling it “some investments” was an understatement.

When my grandmother was still alive, she had given me money to learn how to invest.

Fifty million dollars.

Seven years later, that fifty million had grown into $4.7 billion.

No one knew that Evie Sequence was me.

Not even Alex.

As far as he knew, his wife was just a stay-at-home wife who didn’t work, didn’t attend social events, and spent every day waiting at home for him to return.

The moment the private banker saw me, he immediately stood up.

“Ms. Grant, it’s been a long time. Your account’s latest net worth is $4.73 billion. Your return rate this month is—”

“Help me with one thing.”

I cut him off.

“Sell all shares of Langford Properties held under the name ‘Evie Sequence.'”

He froze.

“All of them?”

He looked stunned.

“You currently own nine percent of Langford Properties. Selling everything at once will cause significant fluctuations in the stock price…”

“I know.”

“This… alright. When would you like us to execute the sale?”

“Three days from now,” I said. “I’ll notify you beforehand.”

After leaving the bank, I received another call.

It was Rachel Kane.

My former college roommate.

She was now an investigative reporter for a New York television network.

“Evie, I looked through everything you sent me.”

Her voice was low.

“Are you sure you want to investigate this?”

At three in the morning yesterday, I had sent her the screenshot of Diane’s email from Alex’s account.

“I’m sure.”

“Then listen to me,” Rachel said after taking a deep breath.

“The New York waterfront redevelopment project that Langford Properties won three years ago… I’ve always suspected something was wrong with it. The timeline mentioned in that email you sent me matches up perfectly.”

“How do you think they got it?”

“How else?”

Rachel let out a cold laugh.

“That was a major city project. Seven companies competed for it. Langford Properties ranked fifth in qualifications, yet they still won the bid.”

“I spent years trying to find evidence, but I never could.”

“And now?”

“If you’re willing to work with me, I can investigate it.”

“I’m willing.”

I lowered my voice.

“But the timing is up to me.”

“Fine. When?”

“When I say so.”

After hanging up, I glanced at the time.

Ten in the morning.

Alex should have arrived at the office by now.

He had no idea that overnight, the woman who had spent years waiting for him to come home had become a sword hanging above his head.

And he was still texting me.

Evie, what do you want for lunch? I’ll have my assistant order something for you.

I replied:

Anything is fine. You decide.

He sent back a kissing emoji.

I stared at that little symbol.

And for the first time…

I felt disgusted.
