My Sister’s ‘Secret Boyfriend’ Was My Fiance Chapter 03
Graham came back with Lila.
“Nora!” She ran over and threw her arms around me, then said with a smile, “Graham was flying back today too, so we came home together.”
“Okay,” I said flatly.
My gaze dropped to Lila’s hand.
Her ring was still there. When I looked at Graham, I saw that he had already taken off the ring that matched hers and switched back to the one he had worn when he proposed to me.
Lila frowned slightly. “Nora, are you feeling okay?”
She looked perfectly at ease, without a trace of guilt, as if she and Graham had never been together at all.
The ring on her finger was the only thing that gave her away.
I took a step back. “I’m fine.”
Lila’s expression stiffened for a moment before quickly returning to normal.
Graham suddenly spoke. “Lila’s only worried about you.”
I scoffed.
Worried about me?
How could Graham say that with a straight face?
“Is that so?” My voice remained calm, but the sarcasm was unmistakable. “If she really cared about me, why would she choose to be the other woman—”
“Nora!”
Graham cut me off before I could finish, leaving the accusation lodged in my throat.
His warning stare left a hollow ache in my chest.
He could not even bear to let me say it out loud.
He turned toward Lila, and his voice immediately softened. “It’s late. Stay here tonight.”
Lila looked at me uncertainly.
“Wouldn’t that be awkward?”
She shook her head. “Forget it. I should go home.”
Graham frowned. “It’s too late for you to go home alone. Stay tonight and leave tomorrow.”
Lila stayed.
Graham had made that decision without asking what I wanted.
I said nothing. I got up and went to the bedroom.
Ten minutes later, Graham opened the door and came in.
Neither of us spoke first.
He lit a cigarette and smoked it down before finally saying in a hoarse voice, “This isn’t what you think.”
“Lila never expected us to have a real relationship.”
“Nora, she’s hurting too. She didn’t want this either.”
I stared at Graham without answering. I did not even know how I was supposed to respond.
My own sister—the girl I had grown up with—had gotten involved with my boyfriend.
And somehow, Graham was telling me that she was hurting too.
“What about me?” I asked.
Graham fell silent for a moment and looked away. “Nora, just give us a little more time.”
I asked him directly, “When did this start?”
His expression shifted before he answered honestly, “Seven months ago.”
That meant they had gotten together five months after Graham left.
During that period, Lila had flown overseas two or three times every month. Each time she came back looking miserable and shut herself away at home for an entire day.
Graham closed his eyes briefly, then opened them and turned to look at me.
“At first, I kept turning her down, but later…”
He paused without finishing the sentence.
“Nora, just wait one more month.”
“At least give her a little time, okay?”
I looked at Graham and, for the first time, felt as though the man in front of me was a complete stranger.
“No.” My voice was barely above a whisper. “Graham, if she’s suffering that much, then stay with her.”
I took off my ring and placed it on the table.
“We should break up.”
