My Husband’s Cooking Bites Me Chapter 06
I didn’t even turn on the light.Â
I carefully shut the kitchen door behind me andÂ
opened the fridge.Â
The thing I’d seen before was tucked away in theÂ
back corner.Â
I slowly moved everything piled over it out of theÂ
way.Â
Just as my fingers touched the container, a voiceÂ
came from behind me.Â
“Babe, what are you doing in the kitchen this late?”Â
My whole body jerked.Â
Only then did I realize Thomas was standingÂ
behind me without making a sound.Â
In the dark, he looked like a demon, as if he couldÂ
swallow me into the darkness at any second.Â
I was terrified.Â
But I still forced a smile and held up the ice waterÂ
in my hand.Â
“I haven’t felt right since dinner. It got really badÂ
just now, so I came for some ice water.”Â
Thomas walked toward me.Â
“The doctor told you to stay away from anythingÂ
ice–cold. Come on, babe. You need to listen to theÂ
doctor.”Â
“Okay. I know.”Â
He took my hand and led me back to the bedroom.Â
Even after I lay down again, my heart was stillÂ
pounding.Â
Thomas had always been a heavy sleeper.Â
He needed three alarms just to wake up in theÂ
morning.Â
I’d clearly heard his slow, even breathing before IÂ
got out of bed.Â
So why had he woken up at the exact moment IÂ
reached the fridge?Â
Unless…Â
Had he been pretending?Â
I knew Thomas was hiding something.Â
And now I knew it had something to do with me.Â
My body wouldn’t stop trembling.Â
I had to find a chance to figure out the truth.Â
It was almost morning before I finally felt sleepy.Â
When I woke up, it was already eleven.Â
Thomas brought me a bowl of vegetable soup.Â
It looked light and healthy, the kind of thing thatÂ
should’ve been easy on my stomach.Â
But the second I saw it, my body started reactingÂ
again.Â
“Babe, I know you’re not feeling well, so I made yourÂ
some vegetable soup. Have a little, then take yourÂ
herbal medicine.”Â
I stared at the steaming soup, and a sudden waveÂ
of hurt washed over me.Â
Before I found what he’d hidden in the fridge, I’dÂ
kept quiet about how bad I felt because I wasÂ
afraid of hurting his pride.Â
Now that I knew he was the reason I felt this way, IÂ
still couldn’t say a word.Â
I was afraid he’d realize I’d figured something out.Â
After all these years together, I couldn’t even tell him the truth anymore.Â
When it was finally time to settle the score, I wouldn’t go easy on him.Â
I forced down the burning sensation and drankÂ
half the bowl of soup.Â
Then I told Thomas I had some work to handleÂ
and shut myself inside the study.Â
The first thing I did was contact a privateÂ
investigator.Â
[I need you to look into my husband. How soonÂ
can you get it done?]Â
The reply came almost immediately.Â
[One day.]Â
I deleted the chat history with the private investigator.Â
Then I spent the rest of the day lying on theÂ
balcony lounger in the sun.Â
By sunset, Thomas came over and draped aÂ
blanket around me.Â
“Ellie, why are you crying?”Â
I wiped the corner of my eye.Â
Only then did I realize I really was crying.Â
“Nothing. I had a dream about when we first met.”Â
“Things were so good back then.”Â
Thomas fell quiet, like he was remembering it too.Â
After a while, he said,Â
“Yeah. They were.”Â
“I still remember when we first started workingÂ
after graduation. My supervisor chewed me out my very first month.”Â
“You worked your butt off for three months, landedÂ
a project he’d been after, and nailed it.”Â
“After that, you became my manager. NobodyÂ
gave me a hard time anymore.”Â
“Then you quit when we had our son. People at work started giving me a hard time again, and eventually I got fired.”Â
Thomas lowered his head.Â
“Ellie…”Â
“I’m pretty useless, aren’t I?”Â
“No.”Â
“Never.”Â
I smiled faintly.Â
And I meant it.
